Car began overheating; stopped to add water, but it wasn't low. Quite some time later, the engine light came on. At one point, the car wouldn't start; let it sit for a few minutes and it started. However, on the 16-mile drive home, it was still running very hot. Eventually, it started making a knocking noise.
