Instrument cluster and spedometer have failed. While driving my entire dash would turn off. No spedometer, no tachometer, no fuel, nothing. After a month or two of this happening on and off, my spedometer started getting inaccurate. It's now at about 37mph off. When I turn my car off, the spedometer goes to 0 (or below 0). When I turn my key to the right, it goes to 37mph. While I'm driving 20, it shows 57mph. If I'm driving 60mph, it shows 97mph. After performing a google search and reading through some tech blogs, we've found this is a very common problem with the instrument cluster and a broken circuit that needs to be soldered. We did that and have not had the problem with my dash instruments turning off since then, but the spedometer is still not accurate. We tried doing a spedometer reset which did not resolve the issue. I feel like there are so many people that have reported this problem, and it is unsafe for your instrument cluster to not be fully functional - that this should be a recall. I know people with Jeep and Dodge vehicles that have the same problem. I am shocked that this is not a recalled issue and can't wait to sell this. I definitely won't make the mistake of purchasing Jeep/Dodge/crysler again if you're unwilling to repair this defect for your customers at no cost. After a brief search, I see NHTSA id numbers: 10253857, 10469302, 10192636, 10093722, 10195148, 10203097, 10093722, 10137954, and 10062117 filed with same or similar problems as well as all the info I've found online.

The contact owns a 1999 Chrysler Town and country. On occasion, the vehicle would not start. Also, while driving, the headlights would suddenly shut off. For each failure, the contact indicated that banging on the dashboard would resolve the issues. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on multiple occasions and the battery, starter, and computer were replaced; however, the failures continued. The manufacturer was notified. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 65,000.

Our vehicle has failed to start on 3 occasions. The first time we had it towed to the Chrysler dealership. It started right up for them and they could find anything wrong. If you google 1999 Chrysler Town & Country you will find many complaints and few solutions. One party has spent over $3000 at the dealership and still has the problem. I am not a mechanic but my guess would be there is a loose soldering joint on one of the boards. It has to do with the alarm. The car thinks its being stolen so it cuts the engine off. What has worked for us (believe it or not) is a good hard bang on the top of the dash. I am fearful of driving. I don't want to get stranded. This should definitely be a recall and Chrysler needs to address this issue. The alarm set light comes on each time, sometimes even while driving! we shouldn't have to cross our fingers every time we get in the van! can you tell us how to disconnect the alarm system? I think that would be a band-aide fix to the problem but we have not been able to find any instructions. The problem first started with the horn blowing for the alarm sporadically and for no reason. We took out the horn fuse to prevent further instances which poses a safety hazard. Its old but low miles and should not have these issues.

I purchased this vehicle in August of 2013 and have been having ongoing problems with the alarm system. It shuts the vehicle down and won't let it start again for anywhere from days to weeks later. I have had a new computer put in and flashed by the Chrysler garage but nothing and noone seems to be able to fix this problem. It makes the vehicle totally unreliable and a safety hazard to get stranded anytime. I have been dumping money into the vehicle for over a year trying to get it fixed with no luck. This should be a recall item that is addressed at the expense of the company. They know this problem exists.

My vehicle has been going haywire. Sometimes the locks goes up and down by itself and you can hear something sort of like a tazer. The odometer blinks while all of this is going on. Also, I took my van to the shop at sears because when I turn the switch for air, it only works on high and not all the time. They told me that seems to be the case with many of the Town and country vans that come in there. Also the pipe that runs coolant to the back vents rusted out. Again, after researching with many shops, was told that it appears the same issues are taking place with this model van. Also there is a lot of rust underneath. Not sure as to how it is happening. I have had to replace my radiator twice with the last 6 years as if something is rusting parts underneath. I will be visiting many shops and having the owners sign a petition as to what are the ongoing issues with these vehicles. I have started a blog and I am not the only person with issues with this vehicle.

This is the 2nd incident for the same problem. First complaint #10468365. I was stopped at an intersection. I crossed the street and my tires splashed water that was running down the street gutter. The water was 2-4" deep. I once again immediately lost steering and the engine began to overheat. I was able to muscle the steering wheel enough to pull it off to the side of the road. I looked under the hood and found the belt had slipped off again. I had to have it towed to the garage. The mechanic checked out the belt and the tensioner and said they were ok, and they reinstalled the belt. The first time this happened I was turning a corner, and the van went into the opposite lane. I guess I can be thankful for the draught these past few months. This is a serious problem. It makes me afraid of driving when it is raining or with any water on the road. I can't imagine what would happen on the interstate at 70mph, passing someone, or taking a curve in the road. I contacted the Chrysler dealership. A bulletin #07-0299 was issued in 7.14.99. The dealership said I would have to purchase any fixes as it wasn't a recalled problem. The dealership told my mechanic they offered a $400 kit to fix the problem, or I could purchase a "snow" shield and have it installed. Why would I need a "snow" shield in Louisiana?

It had been raining but had stopped. I was making a right hand turn when my right tire went through approximately 2-4" of water in the gutter. I immediately lost control of the steering and veered into the opposite lane. Fortunately there were no cars in that lane. I had difficulty steering and the engine began to overheat. I was fortunate the garage was around the corner. The belt had slipped off the pulleys. The belt had not broken, only slipped off. They said I was the 3rd Town and country that day that had to have the belt put back on due to the wet weather, and that it was a problem with model for many years. This is the 3rd time to send this report. When I hit "verify" everything goes blank.

I have a 1999 Chrysler Town and country van and tnbis is the second time within the last 20 months the instrument cluster circuit board, part number 4874440, has failed. This circuit board, behind the instrument panel, controls most of the electrical circuits in the car. When it fails the gauges don't work, the warning lights don't work, the door locks fail, it affects the radio, and sometimes the car won't start. The problem is you never know when it will fail. This is the second circuit board we have had replaced. The two safety issues are the fact that the car may not start. The syptoms are very sporadic. Sometimes only the gauges are affected. Other times it won't start but may start the next day or next week. I was told this also affects the proper functioning of the driver and passenger air bags. When the gauges go out and the passive restraint system and air bag light goes on the chances are they would not function properly in an accident. Chrysler either engineered this circuit board poorly, causing the high failure rate, or their supplier is shipping defective parts. This should be a fleet-wide recall. I called Chrysler support and they said they would report the problem. The Chrysler file no. Is 16463834.

Multiple eletrical failures in convenience items through-out car & now loosing engine power while driving. Vehicle currently at chyrsler service, but recalled part that was possibly installed incorrectly on 1996 to 98 models has had failure on 99 model, but no recall. Dealership not addressing safety issue of vehicle dying while auto engaged, more interested in replacing all convenience items. There has been no auto failure at highway speeds yet
