Electric assist steering gear, rack lost the electric assist. Electric assist failed, stopped working while driving. The electric assist motor adds the "power assistance" to the steering making it easy to turn the steering. Failure of the electric assist makes the steering dramatically difficult to turn the steering even the slightest. It is nearly impossible to control the car or even provide any steering input that changes the direction of the wheels in any meaningful or purposeful way. Frankly lucky that I have driven a manual, non power steering vehicle, in the past and instantly recognized the power steering assist failed, lucky to have not crashed as it was almost impossible to get the car off the road as steering is even more difficult, nearly impossible, to manipulate than a traditional non-power assist steering rack. Car was in motion on rural back road.

The steering column starting making a low pitched whining sound for the past 4 months. The car was stopped and parked and the warning came on about the servicing the power steering and now the car has no power steering. Codes: U11E8-00- & U0001-00- and the car is now 1500 miles beyond the warranty. We are going to push to the get this fixed under warranty but at 37K miles this shouldn't happen, and after researching online this apparently is a common problem with the power steering module located on the the rack and pinon and the whole thing will have to be replaced. This should definitely be a recall as this is a major safety hazard.

I was making a left hand turn on a 4 lane city street and hit a pot hole after hitting the pot hole my steering wheel began to shake. I pulled into a parking lot and noticed my front passenger tire was bowed out and the car could no longer be driven. After having a tow truck come to the scene I was told the steering knuckle had broken in half and the wheel almost completely detached.
