This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
There were 3 problems relating to automatic transmission; 1) while stopping at an intersection and then proceding to cross, the car wouldn't go forward. The transmission line had come off and all the transmission fluid had sprayed across the driver's side of the car. The transmission line was fixed at a Dodge dealership. 2) two weeks later, while driving 65mph on a highway, the car started to shake and the engine was racing out of control. The transmission kept surging in and out of gear and we pulled the car off the shoulder right before the car wouldn't shift at all. Again the transmission line had come off and all the transmission fluid had spilled out. We had another Dodge dealership install a new transmission line. 3) a week later, the transmission would not shift into reverse unless the car was shifted into drive then back to reverse several times. While driving the car, it would shug along in and out of gear until it decided to shift into the correct gear. We ended up getting the transmission rebuilt. Several transmission shops that we went to for estimates said that they see an unusually high number of Chrysler products (even 1998 models) that required the transmission to be rebuilt. We spent $1,500 in having the transmission rebuilt and in time and $ lost to fixing the first two transmission problems. We have taken excellent care of this car and believe that the transmission should last the life of the car. This problem should be investigated, as there are design engineering problems in the Chrysler transmissions.
Stopped at light upon pushing gas peddle it went to the floor, to avoid hitting other cars in front of me swerverd into a parking lot, hit curb blew out both LH tires. Shut car off throttle released and would not repeat problem. I had the throttle boby cleaned and the linkeaged checked by a independent garage. They could find no problems
When first starting vehicle it hesitates going into reverse. The vehicle chatters when going through gears and speeds up to 15 mph. Dealer was contacted and repaired the valve body, and reprogrammed the transmission control. Dealer now states that the front seal needs to be replaced. Will out of good gesture pay for the parts only. Consumer must pay $920 in labor. Warranty expired 5 months ago. Dealer was still unable to duplicate the problem, consumer suspects negligence with the dealer.
The vehicle was in reverse and the vehicle surged backwards while the driver's foot was on the brake pedal. Once more pressure was applied to the brake the vehicle died.
Consumer state when traveling about 45 mph the vehicle will surge forward. Also the vehicle will not change gears becoming a hazard when driving on the freeway.
While driving, experienced intermittent low to high speed engine stalling when engine suddenly shut down, no prior warning, rendering inoperative power assist, to restart, must place foot on brake and accelerator pedal, dealer can't duplicate failure on computer.
While driving the vehicle, put ignition on and the vehicle started to accelerate, applied the brakes and the vehicle acted like it did not want to stop.
Tried to start the vehicle after being parked and it would not work, took the key out of the ignition and tried again, vehicle started and accelerated and hit a tree and the air bags did not deploy.
