YIKES! As many others have reported, the engine was shutoff at highway speeds WITHOUT warning. I had been cruising for several hours and then, bam, the engine literally shut itself off. I'm glad I was driving instead of my wife. Pulled over, waited about 10 minutes, was about to call a tow truck, but then got it to start again. Another 1/2 hour driving (in middle of big trip), failed again. Repeated the process a few more times and limped in to local dealer at my destination. Since then a recall has occurred and the coolant pump design has been changed, so it shouldn't happen to anyone looking for one of these.

Bought Escape new May 2007 from another Dealer. Always took it there for service until this fall. Long story won't go into. New dealer fixed problems 3 weeks ago that had caused hybrid problems all year (cost $1,052, no recall to pay). Driving 80 MPH cruise control on Toll road going 180 miles for Thanksgiving. Got the RED TRIANGLE of death (as I call it) that said STOP ENGINE NOW. Pulled over and called AAA and Greenway Ford. Turns out the "Hybrid Coolant Motor" had failed and it was covered by a RECALL (which I never found) . I picked my SUV up this afternoon (after paying $190 for rental to go to Thanksgiving) hoping it's fixed.
