There is a defect with the installation of the windshield that causes water in enter the cab. Upon entry, the water goes into the GEM mod and fuse panel of the SUV. This shorts the system - at one point you may encounter the heater turning on without the key in the ignition. Here is a special notice sent by Ford in 2002 regarding this problem: *Ford special message #15773 variouselectricalconditions resulting from water intrusion into the GEM/cjb some 1997-2002 Expedition and 1998-2002 Navigator vehicles may exhibit various unusual electrical conditions, including but not limited to: Xxxxx xxxxx rear blower or eatc staying on with key out of the ignition, radio staying on after doors opened and key out of ignition, wiper circuit failure codes, and multiple system warning lights with 'short to power' or 'low battery voltage' dtcs. These symptoms most often occur after a rain or snow. This may be due to GEM/cjb water intrusion resulting from a windshield water leak. To service, remove the GEM and cjb from thevehicle, separate them and inspect for water contamination or corrosion. If found in either component, replace both components and completely reseal the windshield. Effective date: 04/05/2002 Ford Motor Company

I have a 2000 Ford Expedition the past 3 days we have had hard rains. I went out to my car and found that the floor on both the drivers sides and passenger side of the SUV was flooded. My radio was on the car was not. The dash light were going crazy. I started the car to move it so that I could get it near an outlet to use the wet vac to remove the water and the wipers would not work. I removed the water from the floors and when I went to move my Expedition it would not start it seems that it is leaking from the windshield. I noticed that there are alot of complaints on water leakage on Expedition. Now I am worried that the water may have shorted out the electrical system.

It started this summer it had rained pretty good while I was out I came home a few hours later I got into the vehicle I heard something that sounded like something was frying down close to the brakes but I didn't know where, I could hear it and smell it, I thought the truck was going to blow up, so I didn't drive it for a while, (scared )about a week or so I decided to try it and everything was fine, but as so as it rained it started all over and I went on with it like that until November we were planning a trip for thanksgiving and wanted to be safe on the road, so we put it in the shop, November 2009, the distribution box (pdb),electronic module(GEM)/fuse box shortage, a good week later it rained and the radio went out, then the truck wouldn't start, I got toad home, contacted the mechanic, to find out its not his fault(the mechanic),its the dealers fault(Ford) the water is coming in through the windshield so I'm out of pocket for expenses for parts and labor and the problem is not resolved.

The contact owns a 2000 Ford Expedition. While driving 45 mph the day after a heavy rainstorm, the brakes failed when the brake pedal was depressed. After approximately 100 feet, the vehicle finally came to a stop. The contact proceeded to his destination and applied the brakes again, but the same failure recurred. While driving on two separate occasions on the same day, two other vehicles pulled out in front of him, which almost caused a crash. The following day, he called the dealer and informed them of the failures and was advised to bring in the vehicle for repair. The dealer stated that the cause of the failure was due to water intrusion through the windshield, which voided the warranty. The contact would be responsible for the repair cost of the windshield defect. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 95,000 and current mileage was 96,000.

Windshield leaks water on to GEM module and fuse box. After rain or snow vehicle will try to start while already running wipers, radio, door locks, power windows, lights flashers will not work. Dummy lights on dash will come on that water level low, no oil pressure and low battery. Now it will not shift out of park. Filed a formal complaint three months ago with Ford Motor Compny and they have yet to acknowledge that I ever filed report.

We recently had a specialist inspect the 2000 eddie bauer Ford Expedition because of repeated electrical problems. He found a technical service bulletin for Ford on the failure of windshield seals. He further advises that the repairs will be in excess of $1000. We have experienced failure of the vehicles electric system as outlined on at least 5 separate occasions. All times were preceded by moisture. The interior lights malfunctioned, the windshield wipers stopped, the blower motor was on high with ignition off, the radio shuts off, the interior dash lights remained on, etc. I have had my mechanic replace several items including the fuses and relays for the electronics.

I have a 2000 Ford Expedition that has an electrical problem. I have researched online and discovered many others with similar problems. It is apparently due to a windshield leak that causes the GEM module to short out. This first happened to me a month after I purchased the vehicle in February 2007. The vehicle wouldn't start, dash clicking noise, locks unlocking and locking continuously, lights on dash wouldn't go out, after key is removed dash info lights still on. When vehicle did start radio wouldn't work and by the way it was raining/icy. This problem has occurred several other times. Windshield wipers not working properly, radio not working all problems happen only when it is raining. I personally cannot afford the $1,000. Or so dollars it is apparently going to cost to fix this problem, which is obviously a factory defect. I have 4 children and have come to depend on this vehicle, I am afraid this short could cause and engine fire.

The contact owns a 2000 Ford Expedition. The windshield leaked when it rained and caused an electrical failure in the GEM box. The failure mileage was 85,000. The engine remained on after the contact removed the key from the ignition. The dealer replaced the GEM box. However, they did not reseal the windows to prevent it from leaking. The current mileage was 97000.

I own a 2000 Ford Expedition. Within the last month, I would turn the key to crank my truck and no sound. Nothing would turn on. The electrical, totally dead. I would jump it off and it ran fine for 2 days and then the same would happen again. I have researched this problem and have found that a leaking windshield is the problem. It is leaking and causing my GEM module and fuse box to get wet. This can cause a fire as everyone knows as well as unwanted electrical activity when the truck is unattended. It is also affecting my radio which will not turn on then turn on by itself. This is a manufacturing defect and I have read where many Expedition owners are having the same problem with windshield leakage causing no starts and electrical problems. This should be fixed at Ford expense considering it was not the fault of the owner Ford has a manufacturing issue with their windshields. As you must know this is a fire hazard that could result in the death of innocent people. It is a defect from Ford Motor Company that needs to be recalled now to prevent further damage or possible death by fire. If Ford stands by their products this would be a good time to prove that to their loyal customers.

My 2000 Ford Expedition has caused us numerous headaches and near accidents as a result of rain entering the vehicle due to a defective windshield installation. Once the rain water enters the driver side dash panel ( underside ) and comes in contact with electrical components mounted there, numerous failures occur, such as : windshield wipers quit working, interior and dash panel lights flash on and off, and eventually quit working. The safety switch which allows the vehicle to be placed in drive while depressing the brake also fails once the vehicle is turned off. These problems are not just a nuisance, but a safety hazard, and after speaking to other Expedition owners and reading numerous common stories of the same problem, I feel that this is a manufacturer's defect and should be recalled and repaired accordingly. In closing I would like to state that my wife was driving on a very busy interstate in the rain when she experienced our latest failure. Although there was no accident, it was definitely a close call, and could have been potentially fatal. We may not be so lucky the next time....

On January 16, 2007 my wife drove our 2000 eddie bauer Expedition to work as usual parked N a covered parking garage and went to work. At the end of the day she attempted to start her car and it was totally dead and would not start. She therefore had to get jump started in order to get home. On 1-17-07 I took the vehicle to a certified Ford service department and had them evaluate and diagnose the problem. Seems that the GEM and cjb were water damaged and creating significant electrical shorts throughout the vehicles operating system. When the car was turned off the fan motor would actually continue to blow even with the keys out of the ignition. Also the car at times would not turn off with the key. You can take the key out of the ignition and the car would still run. Anyway, the dealer indicates that the windshield would have to be replaced and sealed as this was the source of the water damage. I questioned the validity of the diagnosis and the service advisor indicated that they were working on 2 more trucks with the same problem. The total cost of the repair is going to be $1150 to replace the windshield the GEM and cjb. I have been reading up on this problem and fine that this problem is pretty wide spread in Ford Expedition and want to make my particular situation a matter of record with the NHTSA in an effort to add to the number of consumers experiencing this problem. My vehicle has a long history of electrical problems which were corrected under a extended warranty. I am certain that this windshield leak problem is the source of my long standing problems.

Water is leaking in from the windshield according to the dealership. The water is then entering the vehicle and affecting the fuse box and the GEM module. It does very weird things to the electrical components of the vehicle, windshield wipers quit working while driving down the road, radio turns off once vehicle is put in drive, running lights do not work, battery dies, just to name a few the list goes on and the consequences are very dangerous in some cases. Have you ever been driving down interstate in the rain and then all of a sudden have no wipers. Let me tell you not good. The dealer wants an arm and a leg to fix it, money I do not have after spending 15K on a vehicle. So help me anything happens as a result of the failure and there will be a lawsuit. Take a look around on the internet and there are hundreds maybe thousands complaining about the same issue. Something must be done.
