Expedition Limited 3.5L Ecoboost

  • Automatic transmission
  • 52,000 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

While driving at highway speeds all of a sudden the engine down shifts from high speed to the first gear to a point that the engine stalls. Pulled over the car to shut off the engine and restart it again just to find out that it runs fine. When I came home and scanned the car with an OBD reader found out that there was a p0717 code and also a p0715 code. Powertrain problem. After researching what the problem is it looks like transmission needs major service or change the input and output sensor which is built inside the transmission.

Doing some other readings I see that other people took their vehicles to the dealer and the dealers say that there is no codes which I believe is a total lie. The dealer stay only clear the codes just to save manufacturers the trouble and money. But I believe there is a major issue with transmissions in these vehicles. That includes most or all the 3.5 EcoBoost engine transmissions AKA 6R80 transmissions. Hopefully in the future there will be enough complaints so the manufacturers they will have a recall on these transmissions and fix all the people's problems on these cars.

More to Future I will know I will never purchase another Ford ecoboost engine vehicle until this transmission is been fixed as this is a major burn to the wallet. From what it looks like to repair this, the transmission needs to be dropped and partially disassembled to be able to change the inner and the outer speed sensor which is built into a computer which is inside the transmission...

Expedition XLT 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 61,000 miles

I had a 2017 Expedition XLT for about 3 years and here is what happened.

July 2018 @ 45k miles go the truck from Eastern Motors in Laurel MD

July 2019 @ 61K Miles, check engine light would come on at highway speed and the truck would downshift sending the engine RPM @ 70-80 mph above 4000 rpm. Turing the engine off for 5 min would fix the issue until next time. Resolution transmission was replaced. Paid 2k for 2yr or 2400 miles for warranty (NON FORD) when I purchased the trunk and they did cover all but 300.00 of the 5000.00+ repair. :) Used the truck to tow 2 campers to OC for vacation in summer of 2020 with no issues. Had to replace/resurface front rotors after each tow. (Again thanks for the great write up on that issue) I could have lived with that if I didn’t have the other issues.

Jan 2021 @ 91K miles, Check charging system light in dash, did all the test, (THANK YOU ALL FOR THE GREAT WRITE UP ON THE ISSUE) resolution replace alternator 1300.00 at dealer, while in the shop was advised the timing CHAIN (that’s right, I said chain) and tensioner need to be replaced 3500.00.

Expedition El Limited 3.5L Ecoboost

  • Automatic transmission
  • 35,000 miles

Really disturbing to know that my vehicle randomly downshift. This could've been disastrous if my wife was driving. I'm having to drive with my thumb on the manual shift up button in case it happens at high speeds. The dealer says my model was not included in a recall that dealt with the same issue in previous year models.
