2010 F-150 supercrew - lariat 5.4L. Capless fuel filler - check engine light comes on + message center displays 'check fuel fill inlet'. check engine light diagnosed as 'low level leak evap system'. called Ford about a recall on the capless fuel fill that appears to affect many other vehicles; gave them my VIN and they replied 'there is no recall on your VIN'. asked if they had issues w/ the capless fuel system and they would not respond. Also smell gas fumes when I first enter the garage area in the morning after parking the truck overnight w/ garage door closed.

I have 2010 Ford F150 FX4. I have 36000 miles on it and am the original. Bought it new from dealership. Today I was towing my horse trailer with 2 horses in it and came through the residential area near the barn. Speed limit is 30 miles an hour and I was doing 25 and was actually braking to slow it down to 20. I heard a weird engine noise and suddenly the truck surged and took off. We hit almost 50 miles an hour in this residential 2 lane road in a matter of seconds and I was standing on the brakes with both feet. My friend in the truck was downshifting (automatic) for me in an attempt to slow engine down. We managed to get it to 2nd and with me standing on brakes we were able to keep it at 40 mph. Neutral had no effect and rpms way too high for first gear-every time I slightly lifted my foot of the brakes slightly, we surged to 50 and the truck kept trying to go faster. Nothing we tried could get it to stop, slow or return to normal. We tried neutral and nothing happened. It was not the floor mat or the tow feature. Did not have speed control on. Scariest ride of my life and with two horses behind me. I was prepared to hit a tree or rock wall as we were running out of road. I was terrified of jack knifing. We finally hit an incline for a hill and we slammed it into neutral again, pulled the emergency brake and shut off the engine when we got to the top. Think my brakes completely burned out and smoke was coming from my engine. Numerous people that we had terrified pulled over with us once we got the runaway truck stopped. Called tow truck and had towed to dealership and will see what they say tomorrow. I shudder to think what could have happened had someone pulled onto the road in front of us or a deer stepped out. I am terrified of this truck now.

As I am pumping gas, there is significant seepage. In some cases, I have to stop half way through because the seepage is so great. During this last incident, I took pictures of the area where the seepage was trickling down and showed to dealership. They were unable to replicate and insisted that it was due to overfilling my tank. I told them seepage occurred throughout the fill up process. This was their second attempt to diagnose the problem. There is an issue with the fuel gauge. One moment I will have 90 miles to empty then within a few miles, I am at 50 miles to empty.

Driving home from work (50 miles each way) started trip with 1/2 tank of gas gauge reported I had around 180 mile to empty. 20 miles later got the warning tone that I was 50 miles from empty. I worked my way over to exit the freeway within four miles as I was exiting computer read zero miles to empty. As I was turning into the gas station truck died. After several tries truck restarted and I got into the station to pump in some gas. I put in five gallons be certain that it was more than enough to get me home. Computer then read 190 miles to empty. Drove the final 25 miles home when I arrived home the computer was reading around 25 miles to empty. I checked the engine compartment and underneath looking for and smelling for fuel leaks. Nothing was found but there was an indentation in the tank behind the forward band holding the tank. I opened the fuel door and while messing around with the cap-less system I heard and felt air rushing into the tank. Local dealer re-flashed the computer per a tsb. Four days truck dies again. Started trip with 159 miles to empty 1/4 tank 18 miles later it is reading 35 miles to empty 5 miles later it died showing 7 miles to empty. I the put 6 gallons of gas in computer reads 24 miles to empty. Back to the Ford dealer they call to say that they believe it is the fuel level sensor but want to keep the truck for another day and put some more gas in at my expense. They ordered sensor and had me take truck home till part came in. Return to Ford Thursday morning to have sender installed later in the day I receive a call saying my fuel pump is bent so service is not covered by warranty they saying that I must have run over something or gone off-road and damaged the pump. In looking at the pump today yes the rods are bent but even the mechanic agreed that there is no visible physical damage to the tank itself.
