Another issue with direct injection (GDI) is the failure of the high pressure pump which in turn grinds down the drive cam, causing engine fault codes P0087 and P219A resulting in $4,000 of repairs. This has happened 3 times to my 2015 eco-boost Ford Fusion, once at 30,000 miles, then 42,000 and now a third time at 54,000 miles. I opened a case with Ford Motor Company, since my warranty expired during the lockdown and all I get is the runaround between FMC and the dealership. This is a systemic issue with Fords GDI and they know about it. NHTSA should step in with a nationwide safety recall to correct this problem with hundreds of thousands of cars. Ford rushed this design to market because of the new MPG requirements set by congress and it failed, but they were able to add 15% to the window stickers on fuel economy.
