My son was in the passenger seat, but the passenger airbag light kept flickering on and off. It happened again with another passenger sitting in my car yesterday. Is it a problem with Honda Civic Passenger Seat Occupancy sensor? I want my passenger protected at all times. Is there a recall on this because I see a few people having the same problem.

Thanks,

TN

Civic LX 1.8L 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 4,079 miles

I purchased a 2012 Honda Civic on 5/21/12 from Martin Honda in Newark, Delaware. Since then the car has been driven by me, without a passenger. Around November 12, 2014, I decided to take the car on an out-of-state trip to put on some miles (odometer was less than 4079 at the time). 20 minutes away from home, the Passenger Side Airbag light on the dashboard started going off. We stopped, trouble shot according to the manual, I shifted weight etc,, but light kept going on and off six to eight times until we decided to abort the trip, go home and change cars and start over again. We are risk averse.

Took the car in (per the manual - contact dealer and have service) on Nov 18th, mileage 4079, Inv. # 677675, and was told computer showed nothing amiss; car was not on the recall list. Took the car home and when I again tried to ride in the passenger seat, the disabled Airbag light again came on and off at least 10 times or more. This time, my husband and I changed seats (I took the drivers seat and he became the passenger) and the light stopped acting up. With this information I called Martin Honda once again and took the vehicle in for maintenance of the problem on Jan 7, 2015, mileage 4307. Once again, I was told the airbag sensors were not registering my weight (I weigh 115 Lbs, my husband weighs 155 Lbs) and the car was safe to drive - they did nothing else. Per Inv 603190, the "system operates as designed at this time . System disables side air bag for customer safety".

I expressed my concern to Honda dealership - manual says airbag system and safety belts are closely related and sensors work with person over 65 Lbs and up. I was not satisfied, but they are not willing to look into the issue further. I am expected to drive a car with less than 5,000 miles and less than 3 years old (still under warranty?) that I cannot use as a passenger, only as a driver!!! Given the ongoing Honda airbag problems, once would think Honda would be more than happy to address and identify any additional problems before they become nightmares - like the $70 million dollar fiasco.

I am writing because I have read the article you include on the Honda History, your website. It states : WHEN YOU SEE THE SRS LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON YOUR DASHBOARD IT MEANS YOUR AIRBAGS ARE DEACTIVATED. NOW YOU MIGHT THINK, AREN'T I BETTER OFF NOT HAVING SHRAPNEL THROWN AT MY FACE? BUT THE SRS LIGHT IS INDICATIVE OF A BIGGER PROBLEM.... ONE THAT YOU NEED TO ADDRESS IMMEDIATELY". "SIMPLY CLEARING THE LIGHT WILL NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM".

I purchased this car in good faith, Honda was paid a fair price - HONDA NEEDS TO DELIVER A CAR THAT WORKS AS ADVERTISED. WHAT CAN I DO???

Will appreciate any help/assistance offered. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance. Unsafe Honda Civic with a faulty Passenger Side SRS Bag Indicator.

From the day I purchased the car, in 2/14, the passenger side airbag light was on but my mechanic said he would fix that for me. He's tried several times but cannot find any reason that the light is staying on! Additionally, the engine light is always on too and I'm due for an inspection and not sure how I can get it to pass with these two problems.

More importantly, why am I have these problems? I'd like to know what other owners have done to have these problems repaired. Thanks! .

So while black friday shopping with my adult sister in the car, the "passenger airbag" alert came on and didnt turn off until the car was restarted.

Frustrating as if we would have been in an accident, there was no protection for my passenger. Took the car back in and of course they found nothing. I have been to the dealer countless times with such problems but they can never find out the source...this car is unpredictable, unreliable and a pain. I will NEVER buy another Honda!

Driving with teenagers in passenger seat and side passenger airbag turns off and has a beep signaling the airbag is off. Depending on the day and the cold (I think) it can go on and off a few times, not at all, or 31 times in a 35 minute drive to work.
