The "Check Power Steering" light came on suddenly one day. When I shut the car off and restarted, the light went off and the steering was fine. A few days later I took a trip to a corner store. The steering was fine on the way but on the way back the light came on again while I was pulling out of the store. The wheel was very stiff and difficult to turn but I managed to pull over on the side of the road. After several restarts on the side of the road, the steering came back again and I drove home. However, a few days later, it went out again suddenly while I was driving and did not come back since. I took it to Honda and they said the rack needed to be replaced at a cost of $3300 CAD.

This is not something that should fail out of nowhere, especially on a vehicle with only 23000 km. If I had lost steering while on the highway or in heavy traffic this could cause a serious accident. This is all over the web as an issue with these vehicles and needs to be recalled immediately as it is obviously an inherent flaw in the vehicle that is not only dangerous but very expensive to fix.

No problems with the power steering of my 2012 Honda Civic EX-L until today. I drive my car pretty much daily and have had it 3 years now this past July. I last drove my car yesterday morning. This morning I drove just fine about a mile from my home to a store, and did not turn my car off while there. I start to pull away and the " !CHECK POWER STEERING SYSTEM " warning light comes on with a DING and I immediately have no power steering. I turn the car off, start it again, the warning light is not displaying, and I have power steering again.

I pull around the building and slowly out onto the highway heading back home. The speed limit is 35 so I'm going slow (BUT IT'S A FIVE LANE, EXTREMELY BUSY ROAD WITH LOTS OF BUSINESSES, SHOPS AND HOMES) when the warning light comes on again in about a 3/4 of a mile... AS I'M GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY! I struggled to steer the car off the road into a large empty parking lot. I'M FRIGHTENED NOW! I turn the car off and wait about a minute. When I start the car again, no warning light and power steering is back. As a test, I make figure 8's and drive around in the parking lot speeding up a little and slowing down. I do this for about 5 minutes, no warning light, and I have power steering this entire time. I'm almost to a parking lot exit to the highway when the warning light comes back on and no power steering again. I slow and pull left as hard as I can to keep from driving out onto the highway.

I turn the car off and on several times but now each time the warning light stays on and there is no power steering. This is a terrible thing to happen as you're driving down the road. I THOUGHT HONDAS WERE MADE BETTER THAN THIS AND VERY DEPENDABLE. I'M SHOCKED BECAUSE AS I'VE READ THIS IS HAPPENING TO OTHER PEOPLE AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE? I SUPPOSE SOME PEOPLE WILL HAVE TO BE SERIOUSLY INJURED... SEVERAL TIMES AND LIVES LOST BEFORE THEY WILL FIX THIS OR DO A RECALL! RIDICULOUS!!!!

Driving my car on the highway, I-99 N in PA, my power steering went going 70 miles per hour! Took it to dealer in St. College, PA and they said there were no open recalls or bulletins. They performed their diagnosis on it, it threw two codes/errors. Bobby Rahal in St. College only option was to replace the unit. $665.00 later :-(

This is the 2nd time my power steering gave me an issue. I have another posting here where a few years back, it went pulling out of a daycare my daughter was at. I drove it to the dealership in Johnstown PA (after it sat 1 night in my driveway and when I drove it to the dealer the there was no power steering. When the dealer went to pull it in the garage and they started the car, the power steering was fine. They told me that there were codes thrown, but cleared them out and I was fine then for almost 3 years until March 4, 2020

Looking back Honda bulletins, it appears there were issues with older Honda models in which a recall was issued, but not for my year.

My electronic steering went out while driving making it very difficult to steer. I called Honda dealership and made an appointment for Monday. It was a Friday when this steering problem happened and it persisted the entire weekend. I started the car on Monday morning and the electronic steering was back. Honda dealership said since the steering was working again the problem could not be diagnosed. I think this steering problem needs a recall before somebody dies.
