Back in October 2015, I noticed that there was a slight clicking in the steering wheel while stationery. Then by January 2016, there was clicking while also driving over a slight bump in the road. In March it became worse so I took it to the dealership and they told me that it was the steering coupler which is $14 but labor was $380 because they had to take the steering column out. They said that it was not covered under warranty or recall that they have had. I had seen and heard a lot of people are having issues with this. I filed a complaint with the NHTSA as well. This is highly ridiculous and I will never purchase another Hyundai ever. I even called the manufacturer and they would not help me.

I own a 2011 Hyundai Sonata (originally purchased new) w/approximately 40K miles. Late in 2015 I began noticing a clicking noise in the steering column when turning the steering wheel by even a small amount, accompanied by a shaking vibration at all speeds (the clicking noise was even evident when the vehicle was not moving, just by moving the steering wheel slightly); the symptoms got progressively worse over time. In May 2016 I took the car to the original dealer service department, where they replaced the Steering Wheel Coupler, at a cost of $10.54 for the part but $300 for labor (probably because the steering column had to be disconnected from the drive train). The part itself is a small rubber star-shaped bushing with a metal center ring. I did not experience any significant problems driving on the freeway, although the vibration from the steering column was annoying.

According to the service department, the replacement coupler has been "upgraded", so that should solve the original problem. I believe that Hyundai should issue a recall on the original part and reimburse owners who have paid for the upgrade.

The steering column starting making a lot of noise and seemed very loose. I was very concerned with my safety and of others driving the car with the steering column loose. I first took my Sonata to the dealer where I bought my Hyundai and they said it was the couplings and it would be $400.

I called the Hyundai Customer Care Center and they said they thought this would be covered under Recall Campaign - 097. The dealership told me it wasn't covered under the warranty since I am still under the 100,000 miles or the Recall. I then took my car to an independent mechanic and he suggested I should go back to the dealer since he also believed the steering column should be covered under the Recall - Campaign 097 since the problem had to do with the steering column. It was Hyundai's liability.

I called Hyundai's Customer Care Center again and they suggested I take it to another Hyundai dealer for a second opinion. I did and they said it was the couplings and it was not covered under the 2010 Recall. The total cost was $370 for a $2.50 part. I believe Hyundai should pay for the total cost. I am still under warranty and this sounds like a steering wheel recall problem. I do like my Sonata but they are having so many recalls. Hyundai should be paying for these defects which is a liability for them and their customers. They need to take accountability for their defective autos.

The steering wheel shook violently at 70 mph speeds and will be ok under lower speeds. It will also feel loose when turning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column coupler failed. The repair bill is $295. A good will repair request was sent to Hyundai but was rejected. The dealer service folks told me that the problem does not affect the safety of the car! The vehicle was not repaired. I never had any other car with as weird mechanical problems as with this car. This is just poor manufacturing and not a maintenance issue. Hyundai should do the right thing and fix this problem. Not sure what can be done.

I didn't realize everybody was having issues with the 2011 Hyundai Sonata steering until I found this website. This issue seemed to be there when the car was brand new but has gotten pretty bad in the last 6 months with my steering wheel shaking at speeds of 65 to 70 mph. Sounds like a clicking with a small aftershock that comes and goes at those speeds. The reason I know it was there when it was new was because you could slightly turn the steering wheel from left to right with motor running and feel a tiny bit of play in it. I just chalked that up to a new thing with the steering in new cars these days (Stupid Me).

I took this vehicle to the dealership that I had bought it brand new from and the Customer Service Rep was very familiar with the problem and told me that it was a MB Power Steering Coupling and that it would get worse as time went on. He also stated it was not a recall. He went on to say that the piece was about a $14.00 replacement part but that the labor was the big cost and I think he said about $415.00 total cost of repair. He never said it was a safety issue but I don't want to be stupid so I guess I will get it repaired now that I see that a ton of people are having the same issue. I just hope that Hyundai will reimburse me if it becomes a recall. With as many people as I have read with the same problem I believe it will someday be a recall especially if this is a safety issue. I do plan on reporting it to the National Highway Safety Admin and would suggest whoever is having the same problem to do so as well.

Overall this 2011 Hyundai Sonata has been a great car with over 150,000 miles (mostly hwy. miles) but I'm a tad bit suspicious of the Service Departments.

One day, literally one day, after I get the thing paid off, the engine goes out. Luckily it was a recall & Hyundai replaced my, along 470,000 of my friends, engine. They had the car in the shop for 2 1/2 months waiting for an engine to arrive! One day,again literally one day, after I pick it up this week, the steering is jacked up. They tell me its the steering coupler. The car has 61000 miles so guess what? No warranty. That's another 200 bucks. Oh, did I mention that the air conditioning control panel is not working either? Again, you guessed it. No warranty. That's another $200. So to summarize, after 2 1/2 months in the shop and three days after I picked it up, I'm shelling out another $400 clams to get it running properly. The service counter folks are wondering why I'm so pissed. GRRRRRRR!

I own a 2011 hyundai sonata 2.0 turbo. I recently took my vehicle in for an inspection. Before the inspection I stated to the mechanic about my issue. I can't drive any faster than 40 mph. The steering wheel violently shakes, bangs over bumps and makes a clicking sound when turning the wheel. I was told that my vehicle was not included with the recall. I could not believe it. I also contacted hyundai motor Co. They refuse to repair it at there expense. Something has to be done. All 2011 sonatas should be inspected and repaired if nessasarry. This issue continues to worsen.

I already kinda put this information in my first complaint about the steering coupling issue I have. But I was also advised by Romero Hydundai that I need to replace both axles. I only had my car going on two years this November 27th, but I already have to replace axles really. I never been involved in any accident, so therefore it makes me believe that Hyundai also has issues when they build this car. I feel that Hyundai needs to take responsibility and fix these issue before someone dies or gets hurts badly. I know I will have to fork the money out some how, but I feel this is a hyundai issue that they need to fix. Hyundai has had so many recalls for the 2011 Sonata due to malfunctions. I truly believe my issues are also part of all the malfunctions that Hyundai has had. Please take this complaint seriously Hyundai! I was sold a LEMON!!

Took my car to Lake Norman Hyundai to have the steering checked out. The service writer told me that the steering coupler needed to be replaced ($310). I asked him if it is a safety concern on which he answered "Yes". I told him I was going to call Hyundai to see if they had more complaints and maybe they are considering a recall since it is a safety concern. The service writer came back to me after 15 minutes with the news that Hyundai was going to replace it at no cost. He had taken the trouble of calling them for me. When safety is involved always contact the car manufacturer direct. In my opinion they have an obligation to fix it.

I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND WHILE THERE I WAS ASKED DO I HEAR THE RATTLING NOISE AND DO MY STEERING WHEEL SHAKE AND SOUNDS LIKE TWO WRENCHES CLINGING TOGETHER. I STATED YES HE ADVISE ME TO HAVE THAT FIX. HE SAID THAT ITS A PLASTIC PIECE OR RUBBER PIECE IN MY STEERING COLUMN THAT HAS BROKE PART LESS THAN $10.00 BUT WITH LABOR ITS GONNA COST ME $300.00 TO HAVE REPLACED. NOW AS I DO MY RESEARCH THERE ARE OTHERS THAT HAS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THERE CAR SOME REPLACED IT AND SOME HAVE NOT BUT THE LATER MODELS AFTER THE 2011 WAS NOT BUILT WITH THAT PLASTIC PIECE BUT INSTEAD WITH A METAL PIECE THAT SUPPOSE TO NOT DO WHAT THE EARLIER MODELS ARE DOING. SOOOOO MY QUESTION IS WHY IS THERE NOT A RECALL. HYUNDAI BUILT THE CARS AND DON'T WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR MISTAKES. SEEM TO ME ALL PROBLEMS WITH THEM IS HAPPENING TO A MAJORITY OF THERE CARS(2011).

HYUNDAI TOLD ME THAT ONLY VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM DECEMBER 11, 2009 TO SEPTEMBER 10, 2010, MY VEHICLE WAS MADE SEPTEMBER 28, 2010, HYUNDAI TOLD ME I MISSED THE RECALL BY 18 DAYS. THEY TOLD ME SORRY TO BAD I NEED TO PAY FOR IT.

This was a recall confirmed by Hyundai it is recall # or campaign #97, If enough Hyundai Owners call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and report it so they can take action on the recall. The NHTSA will have the recall #97 revised and take action against Hyundai if you file the complaint. Please help us with this and make HYUNDAI revise and include other vehicles with steering issues.
