The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. While the contact's daughter was driving 20 mph, the vehicle sputtered, made a knocking noise, and lost power. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was towed to southern states Subaru of raleigh (2511 wake forest rd, raleigh, nc 27608 (888) 439-5154) where it was diagnosed with a faulty engine that needed replacement. The contact stated that the vehicle was serviced per NHTSA campaign number: 15V568000 (engine). Upon retrieving the vehicle from the dealer, a clicking sound was heard coming from the steering column and underneath the vehicle. The dealer informed the contact of a recall for the steering coupler, but the vehicle was over the mileage and could not be repaired per the manufacturer recall. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 16V190000 (steering), but was unsure if the recall was serviced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and reffered the contact to Hyundai awards to repair the vehicle. The contact stated that the manufacturer inquired of an estimate of the repairs. Without an estimate, the contact quoated $500. The vehicle was then taken to johnson Hyundai of cary (5000 old raleigh rd, cary, nc 27511(919) 439-2059) where it was diagnosed with a steering coupler and axle failure. The technician stated that the axle damage occurred at the time of the engine replacement. The contact called the manufacturer again with a more accurate repair cost of $800, and was informed that they would only pay $500 towards the repair. The failure mileage was 90,043.

Steering wheel coupling. I have had a clicking/clunking sound coming from the steering column for months, it is audible when you are sitting still, driving, turning, and when you go over 60 mph, it is causing the steering wheel to shake profusely. I finally get online to research what it could be and I see hundreds of other complaints about the exact same problem on the same year make and model of my car. It is a part that costs less than 3 bucks to replace, but owners are being charged over 300 bucks to replace this, for the labor. If this is such a widespread, well known issue, how in the world is there not a recall for this cheap part" is it going to take someone dying while driving for this to be replaced" this is absolutely ridiculous and the NHTSA really needs to step in and do something about this highway robbery that Hyundai is getting away with on such a widespread issue.

My engine is knocking and consuming oil. It worsens with increased RPM. Something sounds wrong in the engine and it has a high oil consumption rate yet there is no evidence of oil leak under vehicle. The dealer does all service, its under warranty and yet they have not taken care of the problem though they have been notified of this issue several times and inspected the vehicle. I am afraid I will have a total engine failure and put my safety at risk either from a crash or being stranded in a deserted area.....also Hyundai charged me last year to replace a coupling in the steering which was causing the issue and yet there has been a recall on this coupling. Bentley Hyundai of huntsville, al. They keep charging me money for repairs or inspections that should be covered under warranty.....please help!

Vehicle is making a loud clicking sound in the steering column and while turning either left or right its a double clicking loud sound. While the vehicle is at a still position when you turn the wheel you can hear a clicking noise both right or left. If you hit a bump you can hear a loud annoying sound like something is loose. It gets louder and louder. You can hear it over the radio. This happens either on streets and the interstate aka highway

My steering suddenly felt loose as I was moving it in the driveway. It continued that way. I took it to my repair shop and they identified that the steering coupler had failed. This part is a soft rubber and appears chewed up. The part has been replaced with what was described to me as a sturdier version. My mechanic wouldn't even allow me to drive the car home for fear for my safety.

I had my car in for another problem. Mechanic advised me that the power steering universal joints had been improperly installed and I should contact Hyundai about the problem I have 48,000 miles on this car and maintain it very well. I saw there was a recall on that make and model but my car was manufactured on 9/30/11 which was after the coverage period. I contacted Hyundai and they said there was no recall but would refer the complaint to their research dept. I nevr heard any more. Do I have any recourse" is it possible that cars manufactured after the earlier Sept. Date could have the same defect"

The buttons and horn on the steering wheel are not working, nothing happens when you push any of the buttons. Cruise control, odomiter reset, trip button, volume, bluetooth, radio station change, and horn do not work. The horn not working is a huge safety issue, I cannot let anyone know I am near or they are too close to me. While driving and while in parked mode

Sonata

Sometime in late 2016, the steering wheel started knocking when turning and at speeds above 55 on a straight road the steering wheel would vibrate and it's getting worse every time it's driven, I have had new rotors new brakes new tires and new float pins installed in the calipers and 4 tire rotation, I was finally told that I needed to look up the steering coupler because it's a piece of plastic that would eventually break and I would have no steering by a certified mechanic I went to dealer and they smiled and said yeah we have a ton of those but of course also said they know about it but they aren't required to fix it, that's a very serious safety issue if it sill make the car lose steering, I also have a 2011 Kia optima sx with the exact issue and Kia will fix it free of charge, these are the same exact cars pretty much and I can't believe they know about it and have a limit on miles since Kia has the extended warranty of unlimited miles because they know it's a serious issue

NHTSA campaign # 16V190000 (Hyundai recall # 143) was performed on my 2011 Sonata in October 2011. I did not drive the car very long distances since then. Now less than one year later I am experiencing loss of power steering when the vehicle is driven certain distances. It becomes very hard to steer when driving.
