I went to to widen the bars on my roof rack and found out they are permanently attached at a width of 2 foot inside. They have the ability of 4 ft if the manufacturer had installed the accommodation. I own a Kayak, I use a system which looks like wings that attach to the bars, they will be minimal for the Kayak is 10 ft. I also have a canoe. The Kayak, is not the problem.
The canoe on the other hand, which is carried upside down and is 16ft carried with a set of bars which are 2 ft apart, are a unstable platform, 4 ft would of been much better. I just owned a 2009 KIA and this was never an issue, my other vehicle, which is a Ford, will also provide a stable platform. I have contacted Chrysler and the dealer, at this time neither have a solution to the problem. In jest I said take the rack off the Jeep Cherokee outside and put it on the Compass, it is designed to be adjustable. More than 2 ft would be helpful.
