There was a recall relating to collision gas tank fires. The Jeep dealer installed what was supposedly a "trailer hitch", as a solution to the safety recall. When I offered to pay for an additional installation, of a Jeep trailer hitch related wiring harness, I was told that the just installed trailer hitch could not be used as a trailer hitch! so, my questions and concerns are "what did the Jeep dealer _really_ install and can this installed part be safely used as a regular or factory/dealer installed trailer hitch" also, according to some Pennsylvania newspaper articles - there's another Jeep recall relating to collision gas tank fires. Only, this time the unacceptable "solution" will be to "buy back" the Jeep for some dollar amount above the retail/book value. My daughter bought her Jeep as a documented "one owner and below 40,000 miles" deal. She has invested several hundreds of dollars to ensure the Jeep was road worthy and capable of being driven over 100,000 miles. What do you advise us/our daughter to do" NHTSA prior inquiry didn't provide a functioning website to learn my tracking number/ODI.

After my 1995 4WD Jeep Grand Cherokee is driven for several miles, 15 or more on a hot day, the steering of front wheels become almost impossible and the front wheels tries to lock up and refuses to turn. Going straight ahead the vehicle is fine. But when you try to turn either right or left, the right or left wheel will slide and the vehicle refuses to turn. It appears that the front differential is locked. The vehicle makes bad noises and the whole vehicle jerks. After the vehicle sets for a short time, it will steer ok as if nothing is wrong. But, when it is driven for 10 or fifteen minutes again, the problem starts all over. The dealers in this area tell me that it is the front differential, front wheel bearings, C/V joints, or the transfer case. The dealers tell me they have had many Jeep with this problem and have not pin-pointed the problem on any of them. One told me to have the drive shaft removed from the transfer case to the front differential and this will cure the problem in most cases, but I will lose my 4WD. My question is, with a problem like this, why hasn't Jeep corrected it. Can anyone help me determine the problem and tell me how to get it repaired.

It is absolutely rediculous that a gas tank of 5 yrs old is deteriorating. I was asked if I use mobil gas and I don't! this is a poor excuse for a problem that is occurring due to the make of the gas tank! I believe there should be a recall on this problem because it is the manufacturers fault that these parts need to be replaced unusually early on such a young vehicle.

This complaint is not the result of an accident or a problem with the vehicle. This complaint pertains to the replacement tires that I put on my vehicle approximately two years ago. Yesterday (10/3/00) my Jeep was at my mechanic getting transmission maintenence work. The mechanic noticed that the front tire tread was separating from the side wall of the tire and metal was visible. He informed me that the dayton tires on my vehicle are the same size and type as the Firestone recall. In fact the dot numbers indicate that they were even manufactured by Firestone at the same plant and have the same nomenclature as depicted on the recalled Firestone tires. This is a serious problem. I contacted the tire dealer that sold me the tires (buzz davies, 93 islington street, portsmouth, nh 03821; tel 603-433-1328) and he told me that my tires were not included under the recall. He suggested that I come in and that he can pro-rate them. This is not acceptable to me. In my opinion there are too many similarities as well as an obvious tread separation problem with my tires. I am reporting this problem so that you may add this information to your database for the Firestone recall. Additionally, others with similar tires to mine should be made alert to this problem so that they can elect to remain safe. I plan on replacing these tires this week end, but I will and hold onto them until I can be fully reimbursed. Your help with this problem is and will be appreciated by myself and other unsuspecting consumers who have purchased similarly manufactured Firestone "non-branded" tires. Finally, it upsets me to know that these tires were not included in the original safety recall and my life and that of others has been unknowingly in jeopardy since then. (dot number: Vdhl hla tiresize: P235/75R15)
