Rear differential roaring sound again in 3000 miles after replacement of all rear bearings/seals and both axles by dealer. Recent roadtest/inspection by dealer confirms continued excessive wear of new bearings and axles. Dealer now recommends new differential housing or replace entire rear differential. Began rear end "roar" at 30K miles, "repaired" X 2, replaced at 43K., Chrysler covered half of repair. Now failed again at 80K. Chrysler says, "too bad, your problem, not ours." Seems like the rear end of a $35,000 car should last longer than 30K miles. Daimler-Chrysler takes our tax dollars for the big bailout then tells its customers to drop dead.

I was advised by several dealers that this year (1997) vehicle has had many failures and if not corrected could cause the rear axle to lock-up and possibly cause an accident.

Researching this problem, Jeep has a history of "rear" problems. I wish I knew this before purchasing the vehicle. I can't believe a 3 yr. Old SUV with 52,000 highway miles would need an entire rear replaced. Jeep is selling junk! how often does this happen in other SUV's? I'm getting rid of this vehicle and buying a Toyota.

The front ring and pinion gears/bearings in front differential have been replaced thrice. The axle assembly has been replaced twice and an updated yoke and drive shaft also was installed. The latest failure occurred approximately 1200 miles after a new axle assembly was installed on June 20, 2000 in West bend, Wisconsin. I was returning from Wisconsin to californai when latest failure occurred. The current failure is similar to the previous 6 - excessive gear/bearing noise. I've contacted Chrysler customer care and a file has been established. I've contacted my current local dealer (peoples Chrysler) and requested a meeting with the district manager re: This issue of continuing front differential failures. I have not been contacted by district manager and I fear that I'm being "stonewalled".
