We have a used 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which we have only owned it for about 5-6 months and we are having problems with the fuel system/pump. We notice a recall on 1997-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee in Jan/Feb 2006 on the problem that we are having with the vehicle, but when we contact the Chrysler Corp. We were told that our particular vehicle wasn't part of the recall. On the page that I receive the info on the recall thru NHTSA.gov, it didn't specify which one, it just states 1997-2004, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Wrangler, so we need to make sure that Chrysler is not trying to take advantage of the situation and not repair the vehicle. How is it that our vehicle is having the same problem as the ones that is under the recall. I spoke with two representatives at Chrysler and I was told that the vehicle that we owned had a fuel pump replaced in 2000 and I'm not sure if that's true, because the recall wasn't until last year.

: the contact stated while driving at no particular speed, the vehicle lost power and stalled. The vehicle would immediately restart and operate normal. The vehicle was inspected by the dealer, they determined the cause of the problem was the fuel pump. There is a NHTSA recall, # 06E011000, regarding the fuel pump. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the VIN. The vehicle is currently undergoing additional inspection before repairs are made.

Consumer noticed a chirping noise coming from the front wheels that disappeared when the brakes were applied. The dealer was unable to correct the problem the consumer was referring to. The consumer had a list of problems that needed to be corrected on the vehicle and they were: Rotors and pads front and rear, emergency brake shoes, wiper blades, muffler and tail pipe, oil dip dip stick, right axle boot, emergency brake pivot, the back glass needed to be adjusted, the fuel pump module was replaced, the rear differential bearings were replaced. The consumer was told by customer service there were 2 outstanding recalls on the vehicle and the problem she was describing sounded as though it was related to one of the recalls.

After several months I have discovered that there were three (3) recalls for a defect fuel gauge/fuel pump. NHTSA campaign # 97V194000, NHTSA campaign # 97V194001 and NHTSA campaign # 97V194002. Chrysler claims that my vehicle was not included in the recall. I have a 1967 Jeep Grand Cherokee loredo. VIN #[xxx] repairs cost $641.56 I feel that this amount should be reimbursed to me. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

There is a recall for fuel sending unit/ fuel pump manufactured in 1996 & 11/96...my vehicle was manufactured on 12/3/96, three days later than then cut off point for the recall...therefore I must pay for the repair myself...I think the recall cut off point should be expanded to cover all the defective units.

While driving 70 mph vehicle suddenly stalled. Towed to dealer who noticed the vehicle was out of fuel, yet fuel gauge showed 1/2 a tank. Fuel sending unit needed to be replaced. There was recall 97V194002, but per Chrysler this vehicle was not affected due to VIN. The failed part was on order, and was not part of the recall. The sudden stalling of the vehicle makes driving it very dangerous.

The problems with the fuel pump and fuel tank sending unit started several months after the vehicle was purchased. The vehicle would stall and/or jerk on the highway as though it was running out of gas. We thought that we must have just purchased some bad gas (water in the gas tank) so we really did not think there was a real problem. Also, the distance til empty (dte) digital gauge has always fluctuated up and down with its readings. The problem was especially noted when the vehicle contained 1/4 or less tank of gas. Through research, we found that a fuel tank sending unit recall (#755) was issued for 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee built through June 1, 1997. Our vehicle was built July 1997. Our vehicle, and probably many more 1997 vehicles, should have been included in the recall. At this point, we have no recourse adsent of a recall on our VIN number.
