When brakes were applied vehicle would shake and shimmy. Hard to control. Took vehcle to dealership to check. Informed that rotors were warped and worn excessively. They were replaced. However, AT20,000 miles rotors/pads wore out and had to replaced.

There is a defect in the brakes for the 1999 Jeep. A very large percentage of the Jeep problems on your web site relate to this speciifc problem. The dealer and manufacturer are ignoring my complaints. Every 10,000 miles or so the Jeep will wobble severely when brakes are applied because of premature warping of brakes/rotors/drums and discs. The descriptions of others on your web site are identical to this.

I purchased the vehicle in Oct 2000 with 28000 miles. We have approximatly 29500 miles on it now. When driving a freeway speeds the steering wheel will vibrate quite severly. Traveling down hill will make this problem more pronounced, eg. More vibration. I called the dealer and was informed that this is not covered by warrenty. I replaced the front discs myself and found that the front discs had allready been cut to the wear limit stated on the discs. Less material left on discs warpage a lot sooner. It appears that many other owners of this vehicle have had to repalace disc for the same problem. In conclusion vibrating steering wheels take your attention off the road and pose a dangerous situation when it happens. I am sure you will find a mountain of brake dsics attesting to this problem. Hopefully no accident damaged people.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee chronic brake system problem the front wheels pulsate and the steering shimmies when the brakes are applied at highway speeds. Safety is a major concern since the problem becomes more pronounced under urgent braking conditions. Jeep service has made six (6) attempts to fix the problem without success. History:the Jeep service department has made six (6) unsuccessful attempts to fix the problem only to have it reappear approximated 5,000 miles after each service attempt. The warranty period for the brake system has now expired and in spite of the six failed attempts the Jeep service area manager has suggested that he can no longer continue to pay the cost of these service calls and it will become my responsibility. I have rejected his last service recommendation that would require me to pay for new brake pads and installation labor, while Jeep service would replace the defective rotors at no charge. There has been no reassurance that this would resolve the problem. Problem diagnosis: The cause of the pulsating problem has been attributed to a condition that is causing the brake rotors to over-heat and then warp. The six (6) attempts to correct the problem have entailed four (4) front wheels rotor resurfacing experiments, one (1) front wheels rotor replacement and one (1) recommendation this week to replace the rotors again. The service representative has suggested that the vehicle driver is misapplying the brakes and causing the problem. (this is pure speculation and an unsubstantiated accusation) my position is that a Jeep brake system design or product failure exists that has not yet been identified and at this time there is no known solution to the problem. Resolution:my first preference is that Jeep fix the problem and allow me to enjoy the vehicle I selected to purchase almost two years ago. An alternative would be for Jeep to continue making the necessary repairs to the brake system until they solve the problem.

The brakes in my 99 Jeep warp every 10,000 miles causing the vehicle to violently vibrate when breaking at highway speeds. I was told "yeah it was a design flaw" by the dealership when I first brought it in and that they have this problem with most of the Jeep they sell. Every 10,000 miles!!!! I do not commute or drive grades. 10,000 miles per rotor resurfacing.

First, brake related problems: Mileage 2341 complaint pulsatting when stopping 20-55 mph, front brake rotors were resurfaced, complaint 2 mileage 16040 brakes pulsatting when stopping also shimmy in steering 45-55 mph, front brake rotors were replaced reason warpage due to overheating design flaw? / complaint 3 mileage 17000, brakes pulsatting, vibaration in vehicle and steering wheel shimmy when brake are applied. Have not rportedto dealer at this time will schedule for week of 07/16/01. Secondly, transmission shift problems: Started when vehicle was brand new when stopping it felt like someone was hitting you in the rear end. First repair, mileage 4428 consisted of tsb0300799 and replacement of rear driveshaft, also rear axle carrier and pinion bearings were replaced.second transmission repair mileage 10453 due to harsh shiffting @ 20 mph and again when stopping it felt like someone ran into the rear of the vehicle, this time the transmission yoke was replaced and another transmission update per tsb21-09-00, also during this service the front driveshaft was replaced due to a howling noise which started around 55-60 mph, complaint three mileage 10818 vehicle still has whining noise coming from drive train. In addittion, transmission problems continue with harsh shifting at times at 20 mph and 50-55mph, these shift points worsen as other problems were being corrected, dealer claims that thhis is adaptive memory and their nothing that will be done to correct it. According to casey Jeep service manager DaimlerChrysler does not see this as a problem only an issue. Fourth complaint mileage 16040 transmission continues to shift hard at times @ 20 mph and 50-55 mph. At this time dealer show no concern in correcting this problem. In summary, brake and drive train problems with this vehicle starting at 2341 miles, and they continue be on-going. I now question the safety of this vehicle.

The second failure of the rotors and pads occurred at 16,065 mi. And the dealer agained replaced the rotors and pads. This vehicle in less that 2 years had three sets of rotors and pad, I.e the original, the first replacement and the third set in less than 1 year 10 months. The dealer indicated to me that next regardless of when it happens will cost me an est. $450. The first failure was 09/20/00 and the last failure was 06/14/01. Something is wrong with the brake system in this Jeep - I been advised that some 1999 Jeep were recalled for the same problem but not mine--help please thanking you in advanceoriginal rotor and pads failed at 9,564 mi and the dealer replaced the parts at no cost.

The disc brakes on the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo are the same as those recalled on the 1999 Jeep Cherokee sport (recall 00V136000), but the manufacturer is unwilling to admit to any known brake disc defect on the Laredo. The problem is pitting of the disc surface leading to a pulsating vibration when the brakes are applied.

Brakes cause pulse in brake pedal when brakes applied. Pads and rotors replaced once before. Brakse also squeak. Believe current rotors unable to stand heat...reason for warpping. Calipers may also be cause. Recommend replace with aftermarket products...believe mopar products will continue to fail.
