This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
On three occasions, I have had very noticable vibration of the steering wheel, when braking at highway speeds(50-60mph). The 1st time was 30aug2000. The correction made was to cut the front brake rotors. The 2nd time was 12dec2000, at 36,242mi. The correction made was to resurface the front brake rotors. The 3rd time I had to have service was 16mar2001 at 41,560mi. The correction made was to have the front brake rotors resurfaced. The service reps. Have told me, several times, that this is a common occurance. The cause, as best I can remember, is the size of the brake rotors versus (I believe) the brake shoes. I have talked to one other person, who stated stated his wife Grand Cherokee, has the same problem. So far there has been no recall, on this problem. So far, other than the steering wheel vibrating(at high speeds) when braking, I have not had it cause further problems. I hope that it does not, but wanted to contact your Agency, to see what, if anything can be done, to remedy the problem. Thankyou for your assistance.
Front brake rotors replaced 2 times and now in need of replacement again as steering wheel and front end vibrate with braking at speeds in excess of 45 mph. Called Chrysler customer service and spoke to representative ( michael farrow) on 09/13/2000 about problem after second failure. He stated " I do not have anything in front of me to indicate a problem with the brake system on that vehicle". there have been several technical service bulletins for the brakes and I suspect at least one of these had been issued when he made that comment. He stated that it might be related to my driving habits and was not a defect with the automobile. The service manager at the dealership told me after fixing the problem the first time at 5311 miles that he hoped I wouldn't be back for this same problem but he knew I would since they have had many problems with the front brake rotors on the 1999 Jeep.
Recurring brake pulsation at all speeds. Replaced front rotors 5 times and rear rotors twice. Replaced front and rear pads twice. Dealer and Chrysler refused to pay for last front and rear replacement $865. Pulsation was severe. Car was nearly undrivable. Dealer claims it is my driving habit, which is preposterous. This is a manufacturer issue that needs to be addressed to protect consumers and the public. There are millions of these vehicles on the road and a great number of them are probably running with faulty braking systems.
Jeep lemon!!! terrible vehicle, terrible company!! this vehicle should be recalled immediately for these two issues, among others! I have almost rearended someone, by lookingback to see if I was rear ended due to the hard shift. The brakes shake so much under braking that I did rear end someone, however there was no noticable damage to either vehicle.
Repated brake failures: Front brake rotors continue to warp and fail every 5000 to 12000 miles. Dealership continues to replace rotors, but fails to discover the cause of the problem. Brakes are the number one safety component on a vehicle, and this vehicle is not safe. The most recent failure has caused the anti-lock brake system to fail. During emergency stops the front brakes lock and vehicle begins to skid. After four failures, this vehicle does not conform to the applicable express warranties, and the manufacturer has had a reasonable number of attempts to repair. Daimler-Chrysler should either replace the vehicle or reimburse me for the purchase price of the vehicle less the amount attributable to use prior to the first discovery of the nonconformity at 12,335 miles.
I experienced severe brake vibration when braking casually at hwy speeds. This made it difficult to hold the steering wheel steady and hold control on the road. Dealer said rotors need turning- at 8000 miles? problem reoccured 6 mnths later at 15000 miles-had a broad blade lathe cut at a different dealer. First dealer wanted to charge me and then said they did not have right equipment to fix it. Problem reoccured again at 19000 miles. Had rotors and hubs replaced. Had to fight to get warranty to fix it. Hope this works this time. When brakes vibrate it feels unsafe.
Front brake rotors were repaired 3 times due to being warped. It caused vehicle to shimmy when brakes were applied. Brake pads & rotors were replaced again since last repair. Took back to dealership & mechanic indicated cause of problem was the way driver applied brakes. Brake rotors would get hot, and this caused rotors to get out of round.
Hard pulsation when applying brakes most noticeable at higher speeds. Two identical defects in about five months. Two different service centers repaired same by re-facing rotors. One in fl and the other in NJ.
13K rotors warped & turned,14K front disc brakes replaced &frt rotors and rear rotors warped and turned,19K frt rotors replaced,22K replace back rotors and turned front, replaced front disc brakes.
I have done some limited research and have found that daimar-Chrysler has isued a technical service bulletin for this problem. I feel this is a major safety problem since it involves the brakes and the rotors are warping for no apparent reason. If the metal in the rotors cannot handle the heat and warp, what effect does this have on the molecular structure of the rotor" will it break apart next time" their fix for the problem is to "turn" or grind the rotors. Sure fixes problem for a period of time. This is second time in about 10,000 miles. Thanks!
Initial problem was diagnosed as "excessive runout on front rotors" and was repaired under warranty by turning the rotors with an "on the car lathe". the same symptoms began to reoccur at approx. 22000 miles. Lightly at first, and now very severe shaking happens between 50 and 60 mph when brakes are applied. It is currently being reapaired, but I'm told not under warranty. The advisor says it is caused by improper torquing of wheel bolts. Of all the vehicles I've owned, I have never had this type of problem before. I beleive these parts are defective and should be recalled. Brakes should not have to be repaired every 12000 miles.
Front brakes pulsate at 50-60mph to the point where it is dangerous. Failure at 3350, 9600, 14800, and 22000 miles. Dealer repaired/replaced rotors three times.
