On my new 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the brake rotors have repeatedly warped, causing severe shaking of the steering wheel and car when the brakes are applied, which greatly decreases the safety and effectiveness of the car's braking. In the 14 months and 14,398 miles since I bought the car new, the defective brake rotors have been in for repair/service four times so far. The dealer informs me that the manufacturer (daimler-Chrysler) states that the problem is widespread, that the problem is caused by heat build-up that is caused by the use of new sintered metal (non-asbestos) brake pads that (the dealer says) are now federally mandated on all new cars. Furthermore, the manufacturer's position is that they will repair or replace the defective brakes for a short period of time on a new car, but after that (even while the car is under warranty) they will consider further repairs to be "not the manufacturers' responsibility". this is outrageous. Is it true that the problem of brake rotor warpage is now widespread among new cars which are mandated to use sintered-metal brake pads" I've learned via the internet that many, many owners of new Jeep Grand Cherokee are experiencing the same brake defect problelm that my vehicle has. Shouldn't your government Agency order a recall of these defective brakes"
Severe vibration of steering when brakes are applied at speeds in excess of 45 mph. Problem first manifest itself at around 9,000 miles. Dealer turned the rotors. Problem reappears at 16,000 miles. Dealer says rotors again need to be turned. Will not acknowledge that the rotors and/or braking system is defective.
