This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Durin the first 5000 miles I felt a that the brakes were not working properly and I was told that the rotors were warped. They were replaced under the warranty. At about 10000 miles in August of 2001 I felt the same problem and was told the rotors were warped. I was told that was supposed to happen, that is not correct they should last at least 30000. They replaced them but charged me half price. Now at 16000 miles, nine months after the rotors were replaced I am told that they need to be replaced again. This is a problem and the dealer ship, clair Jeep in West roxbury, MA is not helpful and told me that I don't drive the Jeep enough and if I did that this proble wouldn't occur. I believe that there is a problem with the calipers that are causing the rotors to warp.
I have had to have the rotors on my Jeep serviced twice. When stopping, they shook so badly I could hardly control the vehicle. The first failure was covered under warranty. I knew nothing of this problem with Jeep at that time. The second time, I had heard about the problem and asked the dealership if I would still have to pay for the service. They said yes, that this is "normal wear" for a vehicle this size. Almost $300 every year?? with the number of complaints, you think something would be done about this problem. I think Chrysler would rather pay a wrongful death settlement than have to recall so many defective vehicles out on the road. I will be looking for another vehicle soon, and it sure won't be one from Chrysler.
Brakes pulsated and was told by dealership it was due to driving in warm weather. Had rotors turned at 12000 and 30000 miles with sampe problems. Steering wheel also vibrates when braking at high speeds. Now have 46000 miles and need rotors replaced. This should not be necessary replacement at these miles.
Brake rotors on all 4 wheels prematurely warp causing heavy shimmy and lurching during braking. Original brake pads and rotors were replaced by dealer at 12,000 miles. Now replacement rotors are doing the exact same thing, but worse. Vehicle is now out of warranty. Vehicle has been driven primarily on interstate highways. Additionally I had the exact same problems with my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
When applying brakes there is pulsation and steering wheel shakes. Front rotors were turned at 10000 miles, then replaced. At this time, rotors needed replacement again due to warping.

I understand from an article in the Florida times union today, April 10, 2002, that 200 complaints have been filed on behalf of the 1999 Grand Cherokee's. the issue is the faulty brake rotors placed on these vehicles and wanted to let you know that I encountered the same problem and thank god, I did not have a serious crash as I always travel with my two small children.
Having brake failure, mechanic has had to service rotors and brakes about 4 times. Consumer states brake rotors have been turned twice and replaced once within 12300 miles, vibration from the brakes caused excessive wear to the tires.
