2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee climate control blend door failed. This causes outside air to blow from the passenger side of dash even when heat setting is turned to maximum temperature. Defrosting windshield under winter icing conditions very difficult. Dealer wanted $500 - $1500 for repair, depending on amount of labor required removal of dash.
The heat in my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited (72,500 miles) stopped distributing heat. First the heat stopped on the passenger side, then a few weeks later, the heat failed everywhere. I had to get the blender doors, actuator, heater core and evaporator replaced. The cost of the repair at a Jeep dealership cost nearly $1,500. I've heard this is a common problem on this model Jeep.
Started the car and one day the heater just started blowing cold air. Never made any noise or anything but slowly the passenger side stopped blowing hot air then the driver side and even the windshiled. No repair has been made becuase of the cost ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 dollars. New parts need to be made free of this defect and manufacturer should cover the cost of repair to every owner in which it occurs.
1) rapid fogging of front windsheild, (2) fogging of front passenger windows, (3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of Jeep. Consequently, (1) the windsheild and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. To correct this problem, a "blend air door" is necessary at a cost of approximately $1,200 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. According to the certified service department at the local Jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee limiteds with duel zone ventilation systems. Dealer said no recall due to no safety concern. Isn't a window that can't be defrosted a safty concern?
I own a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with 51,474 miles. I purchased this as a used car on Nov 30, 2006 from a reputable (?) dealer. To my mistake, we did not check out the heat. We do live in South West fla. Upon needing heat to take the dew off my windshield I found I have none. My windshield and side windows do not clear on mornings that heat would help in that situation. It is extremely dangerous as you would expect. No heat comes from anywhere. The dealer checked it out and said it was a "blend air door" problem and would not be covered under a used auto purchase since we declined the extended warranty. (we took it back on Dec. 12,2006 to be checked out at dealer) the dealer said it was a "common problem that costs a lot of money, usually over $1000 to replace. I then asked my own mechanic his opinion and he said he will not touch the repair because of the time, labor, and money involved in doing this when he thinks it is a dealer issue. If you do an internet search for blend air door problems you will find this a common problem for 2000-2004 Jeep.

On my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with only 55,000 miles, the defrost / heater does not work properly. From my limited research, it appears the blend door for the dual climate control is an issue for many Jeep owners. Note: Does tsb 2041004 apply to this issue?
My blend doors are broken. I receive no heat from the drivers side. I have searched every Jeep forum I can find and have found this to be a very common issue, not due to usage but poor planning on the manufacturers part by using poor construction.
- the contact stated that while driving his 2002 Jeep grande Cherokee (failure mileage 38500) at 35 mph in the snow at 18 degrees, the defroster failed to operate properly. It began to blow cold air and then stopped functioning. The windows steamed up and visibility was poor. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and he was notified that the blend doors were sticking, and not opening and closing the way they should be. The contact is concerned about having an crash due to poor visibility.
No heat on the passenger side. Windshield fogged up on passenger side. Defroster didn't work. Greasy substance on inside windshield and windows. Diagnosis: Shaft on blend door broken ie. No heat. Replace shaft & door. Expensive. Heater core had to be replaced - very expensive. Had to go in through the dash for both repairs. Jeep not interested in talking to us about these problems.
2202 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Had only cold air on passenger side; but still had function on driver's side. Now no heat whatsoever. Cannot clear windshield. Estimate for repair at local garage $1500-1800. Told is very common with Cherokee. When will someone take responsibility for this issue?
(1) none that we are aware of. Feature just stopped functioning. (2) the air conditioning and heater does not direct air flow properly. Cold air is directed to the lower passenger side vent regardless of control settings. (3) duct tape placed over passenger lower air outlet. Other: The problem started before our extended 70,000 warranty had expired but we didn't realize there was a problem until just after passing 70,000 miles. We kept trying to adjust the controls until it became obvious there was some problem with the way the controls were responding to settings. We are not sure of all the effects this problem may have, such as loss of control of other air conditioner / heater settings which may affect visibility related to the defroster/defogger system as controled by the windshield blower.
- dual climate control system on 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited failed. Cold air was blowing from one side despite the settings. Resulted in a $1200 repair at the dealership. -dashboard has a loud creaking sound coming from its underside when I turn on the ventilation. -creaking from the dash seconds after shutting the engine off.
A/C system blows cold air only due to high failure item known to daimler-Chrysler. Results in no defog during cold weather unless you want cold A/C blowing during the winter with sub-freezing temperatures. Problem can be eliminated if you buy a Jeep grande Cherokee in tropical climates only.
Dual climate control:passenger side has no control/blows cold air when system is activated. Cold air from all passenger vents. No heat for passenger comfort, or window defog on passenger side.
Regarding my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee ltd....only cold air blows from heater on passenger side of car...have been told this is a very common blend door failure on this model and an extremely labor intensive, expensive repair.
2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee - climate control blend door failure. The passenger side temperature blend door failed at 53K miles. This is a known problem with all Jeep Grand Cherokee. The failure was repaired under a self purchased (I.e non-Chrysler) warranty with a $250 deductible. The warranty company would not repair the drivers side bend door, thus this repair will most likely need to be performed again.
