My 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee first lost heat on the passenger side, then a few months later the drivers side heat would not work as well. I was told by my mechanic that the blend doors actuators were not working and would have to be replaced at the cost of $800-$1000. I have been told this is a very common problem. I think this should be a recall issue. Please advise.
The HVAC blend doors on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee (wj) overland failed at approximately 88, 000 miles causing a loss of heat and defrost abilities. Due to the construction of the vehicle it will require a trained mechanic a quoted seven hours of labor to replace a plastic part which has failed. I believe this is a safety hazard, the loss of defrost ability, that Jeep manufactures have been aware of and that a recall should be issued so that these Jeep, regardless of mileage may be repaired at no cost to the current Jeep owner.
Events leading up to failure: Normal usage of vehicle cabin comfort and safety controls (air conditioning/demister) systems. Failure: Cabin air conditioning system now does not regulate temperature. The system cannot be made to use hot or cold air on demand. In investigating this failure, it has come to my attention that 99% of all other owners of this vehicle report experiencing a failure of the 'temperature blend control doors' within the 'A/C blend assembly'. consequences: The vehicle demister is unable to clear the front windshield of mist/fogging (effectively, depending on outside temperature). Corrections: No corrections have been performed due to cost prohibitive expense to do so. The local dealerships quote a price of around $1800 to repair the failure, while obtaining parts and performing self-repair will cost upwards of $300 plus time spent.
2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee blowing cold air. I had this looked by the dealer and they said that they needed to replace HVAC sub assemblies. They quoted me $1000 to have this fixed. After researching this problem online, it appears that this is a common problem for 2002 (plus other model years) Jeep Grand Cherokee.
2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee ltd with dual zone cilmate control system. At 50,000 miles the passenger side heat and defroster stopped working. Now in at 60,000 miles the driver side heater has also failed. Per a web site it is a very common occurance with this vehical. It appears chyrsler is not taking any action to recall this saftey issue.

About 3 months ag, the blower started blowing out cold air on the passenger's side. Just figured out what was wrong and going to try and find the part and fix it.
Bad design/material of HVAC component, blend door, causes part to brake, which then does not permit heated air to defrost passenger's side of front windshield, ice builds up on windshield, causing poor visability.
The heating system in my vehicle has a part that has gone out and is 1,300 to fix when Jeep knows there is a problem with the heating in the years 1999 to 2004 when the windows fog up you can only defrost one side of the vehicle the other you can't see out which could cause a crash which could be deadly.

- the contact stated that when driving the 2002 Jeep grand at 45 mph on clear road conditions the air conditioner started to blow cold air on the passenger side. The problem occurred when he turned on the heater. Also caused cold air to blow onto the windshield. The cold air blew onto the windshield that caused the windshield to freeze. The contact was unable to see out of the windshield once it froze. When he attempted to turn the heater off it continued to blow cold air as long as the engine was running. The vehicle was being inspected by the dealership. The vehicle currently had 59000 miles.
Heater/defroster stopped blowing warm regardless of heat switch position. Went to dealer and was told all heater/blend doors were broken. They were all replaced, and it took 3 days for them to finish.
(1) the HVAC blend and recirculation doors on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited broke. (2) this resulted in only cold air blowing on the passenger side. (3) dealer quotes for repairs (parts/labor) are $800+.
I too have purchased one of the junk vehicles with it's un-usable extended warranty. My passenger side heat went out first and now all my heat is gone. I don't feel this complaint has been looked at by anyone when it is clearly a safety hazard to drive in inclement weather. All of us who have been duped by Chrysler should get together and start a class action lawsuit against Chrysler. I do know one thing for sure. This is the last Chrysler vehicle I will ever own!
My 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited edition SUV has had a significant failure in the HVAC unit. The passenger side vents only blow out cold air, as if the air conditioner was on, but the temperature is set on high. The driver side vents blow out air according to the controls but the speed of the air is weak, even though the controls are set on high.
Driving through another state in sub-zero temperatures, my heater immediately and without notice, stopped working in my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I could not proceed further, as I had in the vehicle older people who would be too susceptible to the cold. I took it to a dealer who told me they have fixed over 16 of these problems with the blend doors at $1000 for the cost to fix it.
I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland that had approximately 46,000 miles at the time of incident. It was a previously owned vehicle and about 6 months after purchase, I turned on the heater and there was nothing but cold air blowing. When I went to the dealer to get it fixed, they said it could be a simple computer problem, or a major mechanical problem, where the vents get stuck. It ended up being the major one, and they said it was common for this to happen on this model Jeep. They installed new blend doors and actuator motors, which cost me about $1,200. It is so costly because they have to remove the entire dash to reach the problem. The labor was $776.04 and the parts were $389.47 after it was returned, about a month later, my car wouldn't start up, because the dealer did not fully connect a wire harness back together, so it vibrated loose and wouldn't allow the keys to start the ignition. This is a safety feature of the vehicle, where the keys have to be programmed to work in the ignition. It made it so it didn't read my previously programmed working keys. I ended up being stranded about 10 miles from the dealer. Thanks to aaa, they came and picked the car up, and then took it to the dealer, which they fixed that for free, on account of it being their fault.
