service 4 wd system light/ can not shift into low 4

Service 4wd System light came on my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, took it to a dealership for diagnosis. Came back with $3000.00 estimate. The dealership took less than 10 minutes to find computer codes that indicate transfer case differential clutch worn so they were all over replacing a part that they had done no physical inspection. Checked for similar issue on internet and found multiple. Had the N23 recall "fixed" a while ago. Checked to see if Jeep would shift into low 4 and of course it would not. It has NEVER been in the low 4. Contacted jeep, got total run-around.
