Consistently reproducible problem, transmission winning when driven 20 to 30 mins at highway speeds. Trans overheat light comes on. This has been going on since day one with this Jeep. Last year, trans was replaced through Jeep assistance, the same problem still exists. Internet research shows a modification to the trans cooler, adding a second or larger cooler resolves the whine and the following trans overheat light. This issue should have been a recall as when the light comes on, you lose power and go into limp mode. It has almost resulted in multiple accidents as getting to the shoulder on a highway quickly with greatly reduced power is difficult.

Purchased this vehicle used. I loved its trail rated features and gas mileage. My wife and I had planned to use it for traveling and light off roading. It had 49,000 miles on it when we purchased it. We had only had it a week when we decided to take it to the mountains, that's when we noticed the transmission overheat light came on. We took it back to the car lot. They said it just needed a transmission oil change, which they did for free.

It was fine for a few months, of course winter had come bringing colder weather and it worked fine. Took several trips without issue. Then the weather started getting warmer again and the problem started up again. The CVT transmission does not like warm/hot weather and we live in the desert. It starts overheating and makes a howling sound usually 20-30 minutes at highway/freeway speeds (65+ MPH). The overheating forces us to pull over to the side of the road and wait about 15 mins to cool down.

I have taken it several times to dealership and they have been unable to duplicate it. They never took it out on highway for more than a short distance. I finally had to shoot video and record the noise it was making to convince dealership I had a problem. They tried to fix it, but fix didn't work. Finally they contacted the engineers at Jeep, who said there was nothing we could do but to keep it under 65 MPH!!!! We only drive around town now, long trips are out of the question. Have to rent a car every time we travel out of town now.

We have owned it 3 years now, still making loan payments. We plan to trade it in soon - now that its worth more than we owe.

I will be updating this when I get all the information that I don't have on hand right now. I have the same problem I have seen listed here and on other sites. I was coming home on a very hot day last year. The transmission has sounded off since I have had this vehicle. It just died on the interstate. The transmission light came on and I was in the middle lane and and had to maneuver over to the side of the road in moderate traffic. I was so scared.

I called the Jeep dealership they told me to bring it in the next day. I read my manual and sure enough this is listed in the manual that the transmission can overheat. When the dealership called me they couldn't find anything wrong. I had complained that the transmission didn't sound right all along. Now I am being told that the rear hub assemblies need to be changed. So is this all related was the noise I heard from the hubs? Was this the cause of the transmission overheating? I only have less than 60000 miles on a car only 3 years old. It is so frustrating.

CVT would overheat religiously after 20 minutes of driving 60mph. Installed external transmission cooler, had the fluid flushed, installed oil cooler, nothing helped the problem. Multiple shops said it was a fan relay, had that replaced, didn't fix the problem. One shop found a short in the electrical system, had my jeep for 2 weeks and never fixed it. Ended up trading in my jeep the next week.

It happens over and over again. Been to two different Jeep dealerships that say nothing is wrong with it. Sometimes it takes 200 miles, sometimes it takes 20. The transmission makes a high pitched whining noise, the overheating light comes on and the transmission loses power. Very, very scary when you are in 4 lanes of traffic running 75 mph. Would LOVE it if anyone knows of a solution to this problem!!!!!!!!!!!! There are several complaints online about these CVT transmissions but I can not find any resolution!!

I'm stunned that Jeep/Chrysler hasn't recalled the 2013 Jeep Patriot. This has to be the biggest LEMON out there. Imagine being told that this vehicle wasn't meant for long trips. What, I should drive the first 40 miles of my 100 mile trip and then walk the rest of the way. OUTRAGEOUS!!! Also, being told that you shouldn't drive above 70 mph is absurd. I mean if the speed limit is 65, you know folks are going to do 70. How is it that there's been no recall Chrysler? Driving along on a major highway and you're out in the left lane and all of a sudden your vehicle loses power. This is a tragedy waiting to happen and I hope Chrysler gets hammered when it happens. I think anyone who owns/leases a 2013 Jeep Patriot should begin a class action suit against Chrysler. What a joke this car maker has become. What a disgrace they are giving lame responses to serious problems. I'm going to seek legal advice and if anyone wants to join in, I'm on Facebook. I say they need to repair their mistakes!

Bought a new 2013 Jeep Patriot. At 20,000 miles I brought it to the Jeep Dealership because of a strange creaking noise that was audible every time the brake was applied or the vehicle went over even the smallest road bump. The dealership replaced the struts and shocks under warranty. At 30,000 miles, whenever going up an incline, I would heat a loud whine. Shortly after the transmission would overheat and I would be unable to continue driving. This happened numerous times, even in very short trips.

When I brought it to the dealer they replaced the transmission again under warranty.. At 50,000 miles the engine light came on repeatedly while driving but would not be on when starting the vehicle. The transmission also began making the same noise as previously. So Even though the vehicle was relatively new I took the hit with the negative equity to get rid of this lemon. From reading Jeep forums, I discovered that this is a common issue with the CVT transmissions.
