The steering in my jlr feels disconnected and unpredictable'especially at freeway speeds. It's been to the dealer four times for this and I've added some aftermarket parts, which have helped. Despite that, it is still not right. There are times that when driving constant corrections are required. There is around 2 to 3 inches of play in the steering wheel. The real problem is that the steering wheel and the steering system don't feel in sync. This occurs at any speed on the freeway or surface streets, but I's most obvious once up to freeway speeds. Turning on the freeway, specifically off ramps and mountain highways with turns on accents and descents can be harrowing. We were on us 50 on the way to lake Tahoe but had to turn around because we didn't feel safe. I put today's date on the when did this happen field, but it's been since new in April, 2019.
My Jeep wanders all over the road. Its extremely uncomfortable and tiring to constantly correct the steering to stay in a lane. Specifically when going 50 mph or more.. it has been this way from day one. There is too much play in the steering. It is unsafe to drive on the highway. We already did one factory recall and it did nothing to change the steering. Im tired of all the excuses such as "its a Jeep thing, just enjoy it" or "thats just how it is" as well as the suggestions to purchase other parts and modifications to correct the steering of a brand new vehicle. This should not be an issue. I have driven my fair share of off road vehicles and ive never experienced this kind of wandering from any of them. Also, my Wrangler has been leaking oil since about 1500 miles. Ive already had the rear main seal replaced after sitting at the dealership for 2 months and the oil pan replaced the 2nd visit. I currently have an appt to take it in for a 3rd time because it is still leaking oil. My Jeep has less than 2000 miles.
I noticed steering play with the vehicle during some points its difficult to keep it in a lane especially during highway travel. Then when I was under the vehicle installing a trailer hitch I started noticing pitted, incomplete, disconnected and (possibly rusty) welds on a vehicle that has a build date of only two months prior.
The steering is scary, very loose steering, worse on hwy speeds but even city driving also. Constant adjustments required to stay straight on hwy, I feel like I look like a drunk driver, it's exhausting to drive. There seems to be dead spot dead center 12oclock and has excessive slop.
This vehicle wanders badly on the road at highway speeds. There is several inches of play in the steering wheel. You can turn it several inches and the vehicle doesn't turn. There is significant wander in the steering. Dealer looked at it, said yes there is play, but all Jeep are like that. So, all Jeep are dangerous? need your help to get fca to fix this.
Vehicle steering feels loose and wanders. Steering wheel has dead spot at center where steering input has no effect on vehicle direction. It is absolutely unsafe to drive vehicle on tight narrow road as constant steering correction is required to keep vehicle straight.
The Jeep wanders all over the road. It is hard to stay in my lane especially when going 50 mph or greater. It is so aggravating. People honk at me. I can't look away to change the radio station because when I look back I am already wandering to the next lane. The steering has too much play. It has been this way from day one. It is unsafe to drive on the highway. I just want to put a sign on my Jeep that says, "it's the Jeep, not me." My husband bought me this for our anniversary and I hate it. I would rather drive our 2006 Jeep that drives straight and steering is tight. We already did one factory recall and it did nothing to change the steering.
Steering has about a 2 inch dead spot in the middle where when you turn the wheel and the steering does not respond. It also has a "wandering" over the road that gets amplified with the dead spot. You wind up constantly doing small steering corrections to compensate and it gets tiring to do so. Feel like you are wandering in your lane even though you are on a straight road. Been to the dealership 3 times for this and still no fix. They've replaced the steering gear box and the damper (per fca recall). The first 2 trips to the dealer yielded them basically blowing me off ans stated it drives as designed. That's not correct, it does not drive correctly.
This enterprise rent a car owned Jeep has under 14,000 miles on the odometer. At highway speed above about 70 mph, a small bump or trigger such as an overpass expansion joint, initiates violent shaking and bouncing of the front end. The shaking does not dissipate until the vehicle is slowed to about 30 mph. This problem is easily repeatable. Highway speed + little trigger yields violent shaking. The shaking is so strong that 2 hands on the wheel are needed to keep the vehicle from careening out of control.
Play in steering wheel of 0.75 inch to each side. Jeep tried to fix issue by installing an upgraded track bar, steering damper and intermediate steering column shaft. Issue improved to 0.75 inches of play to each side from about 1 inch to each side. Steering play mainly noticable at highway speeds over 60 mph. Constant correction is required to stay in lane. Issue is really significant on windy days since over correction is likely. I had a situation passing two trucks in the middle lane and I could hardly manage the turbulence and not hitting one of the trucks. My daughter is not driving the the Wrangler since she feels not save. My wife and I getting tired driving really quickly. Jeep has no solution and the dealer says that there is no fix. If I move the steering wheel by.75 inches the steering column turns, the link to the steering gearbox turns but the output arm of the steering gearbox is not moving.
Loose steering. This has been improved by replacement of factory steering dampener with heavy-duty dampener assembly, but the steering is still not as firm as other vehicles.this is most noticeable at highway speeds in a crosswind environment.
The front wheels shimmy at freeway speeds when hitting a slight uneven seam or joint in the road bed, the dealer put a dampener on but the issue is still there, just not as pronounced. The drive train / transmission / differential has "locked up" violently stopping the Jeep, this has happened twice so far but I have only had it for a few months. Both times I was moving slowly forward in drive just leaving a parking space on the side of the street. I put it in park, then back in drive and it moved normally. It sounds like metal on metal when it happens and is very sudden!
Sunday 22 Sept 2019 Jeep Wrangler jl driving back home from work at about 40-60 mph the steering was all over the road. I almost hit 3 vehicles just trying to get home. Something was seriously wrong with the steering. Bought the Jeep in Apr drove fantastic like a car for the last 4 months. Last week I got a U-connect notice safety recall to avoid driving it and take to a dealership soonest for a stabilizer issue. Called a dealership right away, they got me in next day Saturday at 0630am. 0830 the workmanship or adjustments were done. Only drove it twice since then yesterday - Sunday on the way home from work, it totally scared the heck out of me. Called Jeep national customer service number 877..... they said try to take to the same dealership to have it looked at again. I took a video on how it was acting on the road I looked underneath and didn't see anything obvious wrong anywhere. Bolts were tight no leaking or wet spots anywhere nothing loose to the touch this is my 3rd Jeep in my life and something was serious about this issue. Last 35 years of driving, this one drove scared the heck out of me. Something is not right
Steering takes constant attention to stay in lane when driving at highway speeds (55+). I was aware of complaints when I bought the vehicle, noticed it right away on the way home. I made many upgrades to the vehicle, but the problem is still there. We have added positive caster and lowered air pressure which improved it, but it still much more difficult to drive on the highway than our 2011 Wrangler was. It is especially noticeable on concrete grooved highway or in areas where roadwork is being done and they have temporarily moved the lane of travel so you are driving over the grooves in road separating lanes.
My 2019 Wrangler jlu rubicon steers like a boat. It wanders left and right when going straight....has since new and I have over 7300 miles on it now. I've upgraded thesteering dampner with an aftermarket fox dampner. It helped just a bit, but the steering still requires constant corrections.
While driving down the hwy at 70mph it was very difficult to keep my Jeep in its lane. A few times I was very nervous and even felt a little unsafe. Jeep says this is normal. There is no way that it can be 'normal' to have a vehicle drive this way.
