In all the years I have been driving, and all the cars I have had, I NEVER had a timing belt break and completely ruin the motor. Well, really, I never had a timing belt break before. I have been told by my mechanic that the auto makers decided to use this rubber belt with teeth for the timing and have now decided it didn't work and are going back to the old chain link belt. My mechanic also told me that this is not the first time that they have had a car in for a broken timing belt. Not only is the belt a bad idea, but my motor is an interference motor, so there are additional problems caused by the belt breaking. I AM NOT A HAPPY CAMPER. I have not had the figures yet for how much it will cost me to repair, but I do know that when I suggested putting in a new motor, that it was not a good idea! Have tried to see if there is a class action suit against Kia/Hyundai for the timing belt but unable to find anything.
