In July 2017, we purchased the 2017 Sportage as a certified used car from Huffines of Denton. At the time of purchase, we declined the extended warranty because we didn’t think it would be necessary on a relatively new car. Our past history with cars purchased from Toyota, Honda and Volkswagen gave us enough confidence in today’s vehicles. I guess we were wrong.

The airbag light on the dashboard came on so I restarted the car and replaced the fuses to get the light to turn off but no luck. We took it to the dealer for diagnostic and they informed us the airbag control module was bad and it had to be replaced and the cost was $800 because it was out of warranty. Our service manager told me the airbags would not deploy without the module being replaced. We are puzzled how vital safety feature could fail on a two year old vehicle.

We decided to reach out to Kia to try and recoup some of the repair cost due to faulty safety equipment, but we were denied due to no recalls, or lack of complaints from other customers about the airbag control module. However, it did notice that there is a lawsuit out there against Hyundai and Kia for defective airbag control modules but it does not cover 2017 models.
