So we were driving, we stopped to get some dinner and do some errands in the same plaza and the car sat for a few hours. We went back to the car and when we tried to crank it would crank and sputter occasionally but it wouldn't start. At this point, it was around 1030 pm and we were about 12 miles from our house, and AAA would only tow us for 5 miles without charging us not to mention there were 3 of us and AAA could only take 2 people. We called our neighbor and he brought some tools to see if we could try to get it started to drive back home, but we were unsuccessful and we ended up towing the mini home at around 1130 at night. The next day we were still unable to figure out the problem, so we took it a mechanic we know. After taking the engine apart, he told us the timing chain had jumped close to 8 teeth over time because the timing chain tensioner had melted. The repair cost $2700 dollars to do in parts and labor. The mechanic also mentioned that this was a common problem he had seen on a few Minis before.
