Purchased used in 2022 with 74k, engine seemed a bit noisy when I took ownership but figured it was characteristic of these engines. Forums mentioned the timing chain death rattle, had the MINI dealership check noise during routine maintenance, said nothing noticeable but would need to perform an exploratory diagnostic for $$$, so I passed since other than the noise it ran fine. Fast forward 6 months just before state inspection was due engine was hard to start and of course the engine light came on. Took it to MINI and confirmed the errors pointed to a timing issue. Estimate was $4300, repair found top timing guide was broken off and most likely dropped down the timing case which I’m assuming was the rattling sound I’ve been hearing all along and eventually caused the timing to skip generating the errors. Fortunately I had purchased the extended warranty which covered this issue. KUDOS to Ford Protect for having me covered and my local MINI dealership for taking care of everything! Other than this, it’s a great vehicle and super fun to drive, hoping this repair will bring many more years of enjoyment!
