this is insane. i have had this car for two days and i love it other than this clanking noise. every time i turn it makes the loud clank or rubbing noise. this needs to be recalled even tho its not a safety hazard.

It started about 1 year after I got it. I got the car 2009 and 2010 the steering had a clunk popping sound. Now it is all the time. So, I tried to see if a recall was done on steering shaft, per a friend who is a mechanic & told me to see. I really would like this fixed, it seems other people have the same problem

I purchased a 2008 Pontiac G6 and it sounds like something clunking when you turn the steering wheel. I have been researching and can not believe that there has not been a recall with as many complaints as there are out there about this problem.

G6 3.6L V6

I've googled this issue and it seems to be a popular GM problem, especially in Pontiac, Especially G6. Steeering wheel makes squeeky sound when turning and popping sound as well. Car isn't under warranty anymore, though it was looked at once. I don't remember anymore the part they said replaced but obviously it didn't do anything.

Looking to know what to tell the dealer when I go back. It's a repeat issue that never went away, even though they 'fixed' it. I just didn't get back in time while it was still under warranty.

Car is noisy all the time. steering pulls to the side when accelerating but it's not my alignment, it's my steering. Now my power steering pump is leaking and needs to be replaced. Can't decide if I should by an extended warranty or trade it in and take a loss. Either way I am out some $$$

I just bought my 2008 G6 with 38k miles on it and started hearing the clunk within a day or two of usual driving. The dealer said this is not a safety issue but is a common problem with this car. Wouldn't fix it for me though. It is annoying, so it looks like if I replace the intermediate steering shaft it will go away. Pontiac should put a recall on this.

The car was making a popping noise when when making tight turns (like pulling into parking spaces). We took it back to the dealer and they replaced the intermediate steering shaft, under warranty. This was the first time we brought it in and they didn't even suggest applying a grease kit as some others have said their dealerships did. It took them less than 2 hours to diagnose and complete the work.

Just as others have said, the steering started making a popping nose especially noticeable after backing up, turning the wheel and pulling forward. Tires Plus claimed it was a ball joint so I was expecting big bucks. I'm glad I brought it to the dealer because they said there is a bulletin out on this (Google and you will find info) and they just needed to put on a lubrication kit. It took about 1 hour to do. Total cost including initial inspection was $100.

If you are experiencing this problem your dealership is going to "Apply a grease kit as per GM". I had this done one week after I bought the car (Used with 30000 Km on it), and the problem came back around 50000 Km. They tried to apply another grease kit but I insisted they replace the Intermediate Steering Shaft. Problem Solved.

G6 GT 3.5L V6

My car had a loud noises coming from under my dash, sometimes a popping noise when I turned my car. When investigating I noticed that my the intermediate steering shaft at the coupling had movement of about 1/4 inch toward my steering column when it made the popping noise. After noticing no movement at my steering gear I purchased a intermediate steering shaft from my local Pontiac dealer for $150.00. After removing my noisy shaft it was obvious that the plastic or composite spindle gears at each end of the shaft were worn and was the source of the noise and popping. It may be the source of the problem on other G6's. Probably inferior material or design of spindle gears. -------Lay in your floor at the steering column with car running, have someone move the steering wheel both ways at the popping position look for movement of shaft coupling or noise at firewall. If so the problem is simply the Intermediate Steering Shaft rather than other expensive steering or steering column problems. Since replacing the Intermediate Steering Shaft my steering is silent and very smooth.

Seems I have a common issue here - I noticed the clunking last month - exactly as others describe - a pop/clunk when turning at low speeds.

Update from May 12, 2009: this is intermittent and the dealer says they cannot reproduce it - but at my insistence, they will hang on to it until my other parts come in and see

Update from Jun 3, 2009: dealer could not replicate - it is very intermittent.

dealer says if its not more constant its not a problem

I bought my car (2008 G6 V6 3.5L) and I'm more than happy with the car, but if your a G6 owner and you still have a warranty, pay close attention to the steering wheel while turning at slow speed, if you feel a faint clunk when bringing the wheel back to center than have them replace the Intermediate Steering shaft. This is a common problem with G6's and GM must know it because it only took them an afternoon to fix and cost me nothing. I've even got a 2008 Grand Prix GT to drive around and that costs nothing in repairs either, so I guess this is more of a "heads up" than a complaint.

G6 2,4L Ecotec

Clunking noise came from steering column at slow speed and while turning. Problem was with intermediate shaft on steering column. Searched for a dealership who would fix it for free. I found one that would do it for free because i had only barely passed 36,000 miles. Intermediate steering shaft had to be replaced. This will be a recurring problem. A definite safety hazard. Problem is with G6 models with electric power assist. I filed a complaint with the the national highway transportation safety board. I recommend that all readers do that.
