engine has a knock and valve noise

After replacing a valve a few months prior, the engine died while driving along a very windy road, causing a lost of power steering and the truck going into a ditch. Once the right head was removed, it was obvious that the piston had cracked apart and has caused severe damage. Only answers I can get from every mechanic I talked to is to replace the entire engine.

bought used 2012 Ram with 86,000 km on it. had a little noise when i purchased but just thought it was a manifold leak that would be easy enough to repair. turns out it is not and is an engine issue and the lifters etc need to be replaced.

Update from Aug 30, 2019: had the truck in to a shop yesterday.. I was hoping it was the exhaust manifolds but nope.. they said for sure Cam and lifters need to be replaced.. gonna cost about $2000 to repair.. this is crazy for a vehicle 7 yrs old with no driving.. 86,000km.. Ram should be coming good for their faulty parts they used in their engines.

Well it's my first truck. I went to Midland, Texas and came back to a ticking noise. Everybody is telling me it's the lifters and camshaft. I don't know what to do. Should I take it to the dealer or what? I'm new to this.

Keep hearing Dodge should have a recall on this ticking problem. They have recalled and fixed the manifolds etc on OTHER 2012's, 2013's, yet when my 2012 vin pulls up, there are no recall notices indicated. Meanwhile the ticking is getting worse! Zero help from Dodge.

I bought this truck used. It was having the issue but the person selling the vehicle told me it was a recall. When I looked up the recall, there was none. I found out later that it should have been covered under warranty. However, the warranty is back dated so it isn't really five years. Now I'm losing a quart of oil a month. All Star Dodge was no help what so ever either. When I called the Ram customer service line, they were absolutely useless. How can these be the longest lasting trucks on the road when the engine stars failing before 30,000 miles?

1500 Express 5.7L Hemi

  • 83,000 miles

Ordered my Ram new in 2012. As my first new vehicle I have made sure to stay on top of its scheduled maintenance. Recently, for about a week now (83,000 miles), I have been hearing a little ticking coming from my engine. I went to my mechanic to have the thermostat replaced because after a dealership radiator flush i got a code for the thermostat. My mechanic heard me start up my truck and said that the, now loud knocking, were a lifter issue. So like any good owner i take her to the dealership for a diagnostics, $100 of course, and they tell me it is a lifter issue and will be repaired under the warranty.

Not sure if there is a relation but I will be making an additional complain because of a horrible misfire and vibration my engine was doing. While at the dealership for the knocking they puts the scanner in and it was a cylinder #3 misfire code.

Update from Apr 10, 2016: Dealership ended up having to replace the cam and 8 lifters. They did not want to tell me specifically what or why they replaced cam and lifters besides a generic answer that they replaced all the parts that were making noise or faulty. I asked why did they not replace all of the lifters and their response was that according to the warranty they are only required/allowed to replace what is damaged and nothing more.

My truck has been experiencing some very loud, and annoying lifter tick. This seems to be a persistent problem, as every time the truck starts, there is a loud ticking noise that won't go away, no matter how long I let it idle.

Truck knocks internally. Sounds like a 1985 K car. Piece of crap. Changed the oil, 5w20, 6 quarts, at 5000 miles. I don't think this thing is going to last 6 years until its paid off!

After this repair, two weeks later the engine started to over heat. When I checked the coolant level, the coolant overflow was full of oil. I returned to the dealer they told me this was residual oil from the engine repair that was recently done. They performed a coolant flush and returned the truck to me. After two days the symptom returned. I checked the coolant and found oil in the bottle again. I want back to the dealer and they said it was residual oil again and brushed me off. So I drove the truck for the next week and a half with the temp fluctuating. Then the red coolant light came on and the temp went to the 3/4 mark. I called Chrysler and told them I was going back to the dealer again. When I arrived the service manager told me they were going to send my truck to a different tech. The next day the manager called me and said they were going to take the engine back apart to see how the oil was getting in the engine. The following day he called me to tell me that there is rust in Cylinder #8 and they see a crack where the coolant is getting in that cylinder. So now it sits at the dealer waiting for a block, and they are not sure about the oil problem. So now I have a truck with 13k on it and the engine has been apart twice and to the dealer 5 times for engine issues. I have contacted Chrysler many times to try to get this truck replaced and they have yet to call me back. They seem real sympathetic when I call in but no one that can do anything about this cares enough.
