CarComplaints.com Notes: Subaru thinks burning through a quart of oil every 1,000 miles or so is perfectly normal. That's a crude stance if you ask us.

Forester Premium 2.5i

  • CVT transmission
  • 33,000 miles

Eyesight system has shut down completely with lights indicating that the system is turned off. It started acting up and turning itself off and a moment later turning itself back on. It got worse with each passing day and now refuses to work at all. The Eyesight system interfaces with other features such as lane assist, cruise control, braking, and others which also, now, refuse to work. I purchased the Subaru Forester because of the Eyesight system and paid for the option to have it. Subaru has informed me that it will cost $132 to diagnose the problem. This is unacceptable to me for a garaged car with 33k miles in otherwise perfect condition. I mean really, I should at least have access to the cruise control. I understand that things sometimes break sooner than what we would like, but Subaru should be able to inform me of the cost to fix without me paying them $132 before hand. I already know that it is broken..... just tell me how much it will cost to correct the problem and let me make the decision to fix or not, and do it on your own nickel.

Update from May 25, 2019: Eyesight system has shut down completely, with dash lights indicating that the system is turned off. It started turning itself off randomly for no apparent reason. It now stays off and has taken other Eyesight system features (including lane assist and cruise control) with it. I now have to take my forester in to have the Eyesight system diagnosed. My 4 year old Forester has 33k miles and is in otherwise perfect condition. I will report back as soon as I have the system diagnosed.

Update from May 28, 2019: Though you might be interested in how this issue panned out. Without any intervention on my part, Subaru corporate has agreed that the Eyesight system should not have failed prematurely and is going to replace the Eyesight assembly and no cost to me even though the system is out of warranty. I cannot say how pleased I am. The service rep really went to bat for me. This is nothing less than great customer relations and says a lot about how Subaru practices what it preaches. The new system is on order and the installation should take place sometime next week. The dealership, Hiley Subaru, Fort Worth, TX, has even indicated that they will provide a courtesy car as they expect to need to keep my Forester overnight.

Great product, great service. Can’t beat that.

Forester 2.5i

  • Automatic transmission
  • 44,200 miles

I took the Subaru the other day to a Subaru Dealer here. They looked at in for a few minutes, said all test are fine and that a small bug smear (which they cleaned, they said) was probably causing the problem. I drove it down the road 1/2 mile and the Eyesight and Cruise control shut down.I immediately drove it back to the dealer and talked to the service manager to show him the lights and message center message. He said he has no idea why it would do that when the test shows 94% fine and many others are at 80 something percent. He says they had no time right now to look at it or even within the next week.
