I purchased a certified used Toyota Corolla with 42,000 miles when purchased. Shortly after I purchased the car the air bag light would stay on while driving. Sometimes if I shut the engine off and then restart the engine the light would go out but trouble codes would remain in the computer. I took the car back to the dealership and to their defense I think I think that they took my concern seriously because they keep the car for a week on two occasions taking the interior apart to trace and see what the problem is. They did this twice under the certified used warranty replacing components in the air bag system. When I would get the car back it would work fine for a few months and then the light would come on again. Now two years later the light would come on and stay on while driving at times. My concerns are two things. I was told by a mechanic that one of two things could happen when the air bag light is on.
A. The air bag would not function if I were involved in a crash
B. The air bag could deploy while driving for no apparent reason due to a malfunction that the system is dectecting which is causing the air bag light to stay on.
At this point I don't know what to do.
Update from Jan 21, 2019: I have since traded the car in. Since I have traded the car in Toyota has a recall for the air bag system(January 2019) . This might have resolved the issue that I was having but I wanted to share this in case someone else is having the problem that I had.
