Corolla Hatchback SE Hatchback 2.0L

  • CVT transmission
  • 20,400 miles

Taken to Toyota dealer to review. Not sure why it happened. During acceleration, the car would not upshift while bouncing off rev limiter.

Car then threw a CEL and put the car into LIMP mode. Car would not accelerate past 35mph/3k rpms.

Pulled car aside, put into park for about 3 minutes. Put back into D, and the car would not go into gear or respond to gas pedal.

Shut the car, off and repeated the process 3 times. On the 3rd time, the car finally went into gear and I was able to drive with CEL still showing.

I was able to drive the car home 2 hours without any hard acceleration, and took to Toyota dealer to inspect. CVT Fluid was changed, and the car still thew same CEL with codes P2757 and P2820.

Toyota reported that I would need a Transmission replacement. Total cost was $8k.

TOYOTA DECLINED WARRANTY repair at 20k miles.

Toyota would not honor the warranty since, I had mentioned that the issue occurred at a Driver Education Event with NASA. Due to "Misuse" and "Racing". Even though I had provided a letter to Toyota stating the event I had attended was with NASA (National Auto Sport Association) , and is a non-racing, non-competitive event.

I asked Toyota if they could provide me data details to accuse me of "Misuse" and "Racing" but the case manager had nothing to provide. She just stated the Field Tech Specialists are making the decision based off the vehicle codes which was related to the Torque Converter being stuck. Please also keep in mind that several 2019 CVT Corollas had a recall for about 3400+ models to be replaced due to failed Torque Converter, requiring a CVT replacement, and it just so happens that my car which was manufactured in 2019 is having the same issue. However they still would not honor it, because the recalls are VIN specific.

NASA is the same organization that Toyota gives out to new GR Supra and GR86 owners to safely drive their car and learn car control.

Another frustrating thing is that the CVT has no sort of warning system for the driver. Say if the car is overloaded or to warn the transmission fluid is getting hot. It would've been different if I was getting multiple warnings to let me know my transmission is being overloaded and to STOP what im doing, but I had no sort of warning to let me know to inspect my CVT. It literally just failed to shift. CEL, and now I need a new transmission replacement. $8K at 20k miles.

So now I will be paying out of pocket to repair/replace the CVT
