  • 84,000 miles

On a regular basis, one headlight will go out or sometimes both will shut off at the same time while I'm driving. They will usually come back on after turning off and on but it is an extreme hazard as there are many dark roads in Texas. It has been happening since I purchased the vehicle in 2014.

I bought this 2007 Toyota Prius used and was not informed by the seller that there was a problem with the hid headlamps. While driving, the right headlamp will periodically flicker and/or cut out. Turning off then on the headlights resets it to be on. After researching the problme online, I discovered that this is a known issue with Toyota and that there was a class action lawsuit. Replacing the bulbs for this model are very expensive and this problem should not be occurring. I would like to know how to get this problem resolved. Thank you!

Front driver side headlight keeps turning off intermittently and at random while driving. The car has been in to the Toyota service department several times but the problem can not be isolated. Several on-line forums suggest this is a manufacturer defect with the hid or electrical connection and have been charged thousands of dollars replacing bulbs, light housings, and connectors without fixing the issue. This is a major safety concern and traffic violation to be driving at night when your headlight can turn of at any moment. Please have Toyota address this issue immediately. Headlights (low-beam) turned off randomly while driving at night. Flicking light switch off and back on usually turned lights back on. Flicking on brights and then back to low didn't help.

Hid headlights go off while driving. Turning off and back on will restart for a bit. Sometimes they are dim or flicker before going off. I have changed the ballast and bulbs for both sides multiple times over the past 5 years without a permanent repair. Had all work redone with new Toyota parts on 11/29 and they are not working again on 12/1. apparently this is a known defect with this model and Toyota extended the warranty but that is long since past. The vehicle is unusable after dark as they are now both going off without warning.

The headlights are prone to turning to off randomly, sometimes one side, other times both sides. After turning them on/off at the steering column they will come back on for a while then the issue starts over. This problem occurs with the vehicle either moving or in the stationary mode. No headlights when driving at night is a definite safety hazard. So far, Toyota refuses to fix. The lights will go out one at a time if the drivers side light goes out both lights have gone out. I got a warning ticket for headlight out by officer when I turned them off and back on they came on. Next day went to inspection station and the lights passed. Have inspection report and warning ticket. Date of incident 11/27/2017. Replaced bulbs several times. Very dangerous to have both lights go out driving 70 mph.

My passenger side headlight bulb goes off suddenly and I have to switch it off and on and it will back on for some time and goes off again. I paid $ to replace the headlight bulb and after couple of months the problem arise again and this time it's ballast failure which I still didn't fix due to high cost. I need help if Toyota can look into this issue which deals with our driving safety.

The headlight randomly flickers then goes out. Turning the headlights off then on will get the headlight to turn back on. This happens at random times and is dangerous especially on poorly lit roads in the dark.

The headlights might go off when I have them on. Sometimes on the drivers side sometimes on the passenger side. If I turn the headlights on and off they will come back on. Sometimes this happens a couple of times in a 1/2 trip sometimes it does not happen at all. A loose connection does not seem to be the problem because I can go over bumps and the lights don't flicker or go off. There is no rhyme or reason, I will just be driving and a headlight will go off and will come back on if I turn the headlight switch off the back to on.

The headlights frequently shut off for no apparent reason, either one or the other or both. It seems to occur at random, whether idling or while in motion. The headlights will turn back on if the lights are shut off and turned back on, however it can be dangerous when the lights can both shut off while driving on a dark road and the constant turning off and on of the headlights while driving is distracting and potentially dangerous to other drivers. I don't know exactly when it started happening but it has been going on for at least a year.

The headlights constantly go off by themselves sporadically. I never know when the issue occurs only if I see my headlights reflected in the car in front of me do I know whether one of the lights are out. Turning the lights off and clicking them back on temporarily resolves the problem, but it is a constant problem that is unsafe and scary at times because it causes extreme visibility issues. This has happened at any time, while I'm on the street, while I'm parked and on the highway.

Takata issue: I am filing this complaint on behalf of caela erickson, my seventeen-year old grand-daughter. The vehicle was recently purchased used as her first-vehicle. The first time she drove it at night, the headlights dimmed and then actually turned of! this was while she was driving on a dark and winding back road here in the ojai valley on a busy holiday weekend. This is a very dangerous situation and one that could have had tragic consequences. When we took the vehicle into the local dealership, we were informed that there had been a class action suit settlement years before and that, although the car had been sold used to the previous owner through another dealership, the repair work had not been done. We were informed that the work required to completely replace both headlight systems...work that must be done to make the car safe to drive and that will cost nearly $1000...is no longer covered. This is totally unacceptable. If the problem was bad enough to be covered in a class-action suit, why didn't the original dealership insure that the vehicle was safe prior to re-selling it? it seems to me that as the sales end of the Toyota corporation, it was their responsibility to have corrected this dangerous problem prior to putting it back on the road. I believe this incident is an example of why this problem needs to be up-graded to a recall! there should not be a time limit on safety issues and consumers should not be placed in danger and/or have to foot the bill for Toyota's decision to purchase sub-par products from takata.

The car's hid headlamp just goes out sporadically. So far, it is "solved" by turning headlamps off and on again; but it repeats itself. The front right strut was broken shortly after we bought the car (55 days ago) and needed replacement. We replaced strut.
