2011 Toyota Prius Owner Comments

Like other comments/complaints here, my Prius braking system seems to disfunction when hitting a pothole or bumpy or rocky road. I have to release and press again to force it to stop before hitting the car/people in front of the car. It can cause serious problems if not fixed. The frequency of this happen can be quite frequent depending on your road situation.

I have not sent the car to diagnose for the exact issue but it. I hope Toyota start investigate it and give an sound answer.

I am the original owner of a 2011 Toyota Prius. It has ALWAYS accelerated forward (like jumping forward) when I go over a pot hole or a bumpy road. There is no way to control it. I think it's a BIG problem with this Prius and a recall should be issued. It's happened probably 100 times with my vehicle by now. To many times to count! It just speeds forward as if someone is pushing on the gas.

I wish Toyota would fix the problem. Car launches when braking over bumpy roads. Had car in dealer several times no resolve.

Update from Oct 13, 2016: Just got back from Toyota dealer about the brake issue over bumpy roads. The service agent checked with the main service tech. He informed me that it is an abs issue and there is no fix to resolve the issue except being careful when braking over bumpy roads. I guess I have to live with the problem. Will probably not buy Toyota in the future.

If you brake while hitting a bump, the brakes lock and the car keeps going.

Toyota is losing my loyalty the more I find out about the 2011 Prius brake problem and their lack of recall or mitigation for this manufacturing defect. If I brake hard, or brake while going over a bump, the brakes work initially, then completely disengage. Based on the sounds at the time of the failure it seems there is a problem switching between the regenerative and traditional brakes. Every time I'm close behind someone I worry I won't be able to brake fast enough because of this frequent failure. I took the car into the Toyota dealer, and as has been frequently reported by others they found nothing wrong with the brakes. This is not an acceptable response to a potentially fatal design failure. I am looking to file a class action lawsuit. If you're experiencing a similar issue, please contact me. Thanks!

While applying brakes on a bumpy road, or hitting a pot hole, the brakes fail momentarily allowing the car to lurch forward, then the brakes work fine. I explained the situation to the service people at Toyota dealer, I was told there was nothing wrong with the brake. Last week I experienced a more serious problem during a stop and go traffic. At one point, I had to press the brake hard to bring the car to a full stop. Shortly after that when I needed to slow down the car and pressed on the brake, but the brake did not work and the car kept moving right into the rear of the car in front. It was a very scary experience, luckily the other driver and I were not injured. I hope Toyota will investigate the brake system (1) when it is used on a bumpy road; (2) when the brake has to be pressed hard one after another.

My Prius also has issues with the brakes - most noticeable when I put on brakes when back wheels have hit a dip in the road. I have taken it to the Toyota dealership who tells me there are no known brake issues noted and after "driving it over bumpy roads" they could not find a problem with the brakes.

The 2011 Toyota Prius has major brake problems. It does not work over bumpy roads and will not work at times when you step on them and the car hydroplanes. This has happened several times. Very scary cause you have no control. Pumping the brakes does not help. Have had two accidents due to this. Last accident totaled the car. Luckily no one was hurt. Complained to Toyota office after the first accident and they had me bring car in for inspection. They ran some diagnostics on the car and said it was fine. Took to Toyota dealers and they say nothing is wrong. Was very worried when kids are in car. Now second accident happened and car is totaled. Very upset!!! Will not buy a Toyota again!!!

THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY ME WHEN SEVERAL TIMES I THOUGHT THAT THE BRAKES DIDN'T RESPOND WHILE GOING OVER SOME BUMPY ROAD SURFACES. THE OTHER DAY I WAS SLOWING AS I WENT OVER A SPEED BUMP AND BRAKING TO SLOW FOR THE STOP SIGN JUST PAST THE SPEED BUMP. AS I WENT OVER IT THE BRAKES LITERALLY STOPPED WORKING AND I FELT AS IF I WAS LURCHING FORWARD.

I RECEIVED A RECALL FOR ANOTHER MATTER TODAY AND DECIDED TO GOOGLE 2011 PRIUS BRAKE RECALLS. FOUND NONE BUT FOUND OTHERS DESCRIBING EXACTLY WHAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED. TIME TO CALL THE DEALER!!! ANY HELP APPRECIATED!!!
