There was an "extended warranty program" by Toyota to get this fixed for free but I was ineligible since I don't drive my car as much, so I didn't get this problem until 2 years after the program ended. As a result, dealerships want me to pay ~$2,400 to get this fixed. But at the time of writing this complaint, the car isn't worth more than $8k. So I attempted to contact Toyota but no alternatives were offered other than for me to foot the bill, even though the issue was a defective rear assembly that they put in the car to begin with. The car is really noisy and this sucks.

RAV4 V6

This horrible noise coming from the rear of the vehicle has gotten progressively worse over the last few months, and the noise increases in pitch and volume as the vehicle picks up speed. The RAV has been at two different dealers, one of whom insisted it was the rusted rotors and pads rubbing. (No, it wasn't at all.)

I wrote to Toyota and explained the problem and that had it been diagnosed properly when I took it to the second Toyota dealership, it would have been covered under the drivetrain warranty. I had taken the vehicle in for a recall to be performed and told the service department of the problem. They performed the recall work, but when I picked it up I got the "deer in the headlights" look when I asked about the diagnosis for the noise problem. Well, oddly enough, there was NO mention of that problem on the service order IN SPITE of the rather involved conversation I had with the service man on the telephone.

I am beyond irritated with this nonsense and have eliminated Toyota as the manufacturer of any future vehicle of mine.

I am one of many reporting this problem on this car. As noted it was just over 100K in mileage but could not get it taken care of under the warranty. This defect is in an enclosed system so the fault lies in the manufacturing of the assembly. Unacceptable.
