The engine started eating oil with no other issues or symptoms. No oil leaking out visibly. I paid to have the gasket replaced near the top of the engine because there was evidence of leakage there a few years ago, but that did NOT fix the consumption problem. The mechanics at Charles Barker Toyota told me that it is impossible to tell what is wrong without removing and breaking down the engine, and advised that instead I start looking for a new car.
The car has been very well maintained by me all this time and is in terrific condition except for this oil consumption problem. Yes, it has now approximately 190K miles on it, with me adding oil constantly between oil changes after the first 1000 miles. This car has never sat idle for more than a few days at a time, so unless Toyotas simply cannot be counted on for more than 100-120K miles, I would like the company to address this issue, and basically stand behind their product.
