This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
I would like to add my name to the list of people who have Toyota's with acceleration issues. I own a 2008 Toyota Tacoma. I made a complaint with Toyota shortly after purchasing the vehicle that I have felt, on many occasions, while stopped, a sudden surge forward. At times, it feels as though I was bumped from behind. Toyota told me that it was a result of the air conditioner compressor kicking on. The problem is that about 90% of the time, my A/C was not on. I was lucky enough that the only times I have felt this was while stopped with my foot on the brake. There has never been an accident due to this with my vehicle. My complaint is listed on their service record od my vehicle. I will simply put that date of incident as today's date, as this particular surge has happened so many times. I have floor mats that do not slide forward, my pedal is not on the recall list, and I do not drive with both feet. I feel that the issue has something to do with their fuel delivery system.
Fuel filler neck flap broke off and fell into the tank.gas mileage is terrible. Left turn signal stayed on and air conditioner was working intermittently. Took vehicle to champion Toyota on 10-15-09. Dealership stated that flap inside tank is normal... they repaired turn signal and stated that this could have caused the A/C to not work properly. Dealership stated that wires were burnt together causing the turn signal to stay on. Received vehicle back on 10-20-09. Also, I had taken the vehicle to dealership a few months prior to the 10-15-09 incident concerning A/C not working, they said they corrected problem. Also, tailgate has bowed after moving a light dryer. Dealer states that tailgate is not rated.
2008 Toyota Tacoma upon slowing and applying brake, vehicle suddenly accelerated and brake could not stop it. The tires were spinning and vehicle was vibrating, tires were smoking. It stopped racing when ignition was turned off.
2008 Toyota Tacoma sport trd 4X4 truck. I was driving on the highway at about 65mph and went to change lanes to pass and the accelerator seemed to have stuck and keep accelerating even know I wasn't pushing the gas & the brake felt like a weight not a normal brake pedal. The truck also has higher idle at time of and has done this several times but not all the time. The garage claims they can't find an issue and they tell you not to worry about it. The consequences to this failure or action is vary dangerous as the vehicle seems uncontrollable and you couldn't slow it, even when down shifting it would wind out. It lasts about 1 mile or so (sometimes longer) and then seems to go back to normal. My main concern is that I have already filed for the Toyota dispute settlement program but have not heard anything to date, I filed because my brand new Tacoma has many, many other issues and nobody will help or fix it being certified Toyota dealership/garage or the California Toyota Corp. They don't care 1 bit and claim it's under warranty but the garage needs to tell them what's wrong with it to fix it. A massive huge run around. I have also researched this myself and it seems to be a growing problem and have a reported 400+ cases of similar instances. Toyota does not stand behind their trucks anymore. Something needs to be done before people get seriously injured and or die from this issue. I don't feel safe driving this truck for several reasons and that being the most important 1. also you can find many many more others that have this issue on consumeraffairs.com under Toyota recalls or problems. Have a look. The trucks have major issues and nobody seems to care about it. I was a loyal Toyota owner until all this. I had a 2003 Tacoma with vary similar issues and should of never went back for more.
