The starter went out at about 35,000 but the truck was 4 years old, so out of warranty. I was surprised to find out that the starter was INSIDE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD!!!!! This caused the labor to be really high because the manifold cover had to be removed. I had the starter replaced with a new Bosch which came with a lifetime warranty. I have NEVER had a starter fail this early!
I am writing this in 2018. Guess what... the Bosch starter failed about 2 months ago. The auto parts store the Bosch was purchased from sold out to another parts store who does not carry Bosch. They covered a replacement starter under warranty, but it is not a Bosch, and the lifetime warranty now ends. The labor to have the starter put in ran a little bit under $600. Right now the truck only has 77,000 miles on it.
We bought a new 2017 Corolla last year and when it had less than 15,000 miles on it, It's starter failed! It was covered under warranty, but Toyota would not help with having it towed in even though we had purchased an extended service package that was supposed to cover towing.
I used to be a diehard Toyota owner, but the next vehicle will not be a Toyota... Honda will get out next sale.
I have driven Toyotas since I paid for my own vehicles (32 years) because of their reliability. When this truck was 2 years old the coating on the mag wheels started peeling off. I drive this vehicle about 6,000 miles a year. With less than 33,000 miles on in the starter failed. $950 for repair. So much for Toyota reliability and my loyalty.
