excessive under carriage rusting

Well last week I took my 2006 Tundra Crew Max to have a state inspection done and the Toyota Dealer mentioned to me about the frame rusting. I took a look at the pictures and contacted 1-800 Toyota to complain about the coating has came off and looks like the moisture was held in and created the frame to rust more than ever. 1-800 Toyota said its not under warranty and I asked them is they could help me out on the cost to have it replaced and they said NO.

I the contacted the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Vehicle Safety Hotline Information Center and reported the issue with my truck and explained the situation. I should have had Toyota put a new frame in the truck in 2014 instead of letting them put flexible tar on the frame and made it rust faster.

I am very disappointed in Toyota after 35 years of loyalty purchasing vehicles from them and now they have left me down. Awaiting on the US DOT response and see what happens. If nothing, I will have to go to plan B clean the rust and try Corrosion Free Spray to keep it together for a little longer. The body is in excellent shape but the frame is rusty junk.

Received a recall notice from Toyota around 2013 or so. Took vehicle to dealer who inspected and said the frame did not need to be replaced but Toyota would rust proof the frame to stop any further rusting. This was performed by the dealer. Now, several years later, the rust proofing that was applied has peeled and flaked off and the frame now has rust holes.

Dealer states that the recall is now over and that Toyota will do nothing further. From what I have learned almost all of the tundra frames were defective from their suppler with improper steel being used in their manufacture. Since Toyota accepted and used these frames, they should still continue the recall and replace any frames which exhibit rust holes.

This is not a safe condition and could lead to an accident or death. Now I am forced to replace my truck or find a solution to fix the problem. Since improper steel was used, fixing one area will only be a short term solution until it rusts thru someplace else. I also see they are now recalling 2007 and 2008 Tundras for almost the same problem.

I won’t be buying another Toyota truck in the near future, or if ever again.

Have a 2006 Tundra SR 5 4x4 double cab original owner. Followed through with all recalls etc. Front gas tank strap rusted out and broke. Took to dealership to have both replaced. Called back to shop after waiting almost an hour. Was informed that my new straps couldn't be installed because frame rotted out. Was told they would place my ratchet straps back on and park it when I got home. I did have the recall for rust protection sprayed on a few years ago. Now have a case number after calling Toyota. Hurry up and wait now.

Update from Jun 7, 2017: After numerous phone calls to dealership and Toyota was told by case manager they closed my case.

Been a loyal Toyota fan since 1996 not anymore. Truck sits in my driveway as scrap.

Options now Wisconsin consumer protection, lawyer, local TV.

Felt like a kick in the gut. Thanks Toyota for nothing........
