Escape 2.5L 4 cyl
- Automatic transmission
- 12,000 miles
When put into reverse, the vehicle will on occasion lurch. This generally happens after I have been driving for a number of miles (40 or more) and stop. When I go to put it in reverse after a short stop the car lurches badly, it feels as though the transmission does not engage. Not a problem if I leave it for a long period of time, such as overnight.

I have the same problem with the car lurching into gear. Feels like popping the clutch on a standard. Of course my car is just over 1000 miles out of warranty. I've only had it four months, so not very happy to say the least. Will be taking it to the dealer today. If this is going to cost me very much at all I'll be trading it in on something that is definitely not a Ford.

We are getting ready for the 3rd trip to the dealer on this problem. Every time we slow down for a light or if someone is turning in front of us, we get this jerk or lunge when you apply foot on the accelerator like you have been hit from behind. First visit, they said they reprogrammed the transmission. 2nd time after they had it for a week they replaced the transmission cooler. Now after 1 week we are back in the same problem again. We don't know what to do now!!!!

This started about two weeks ago. At first it only done it once that day. When I was pulling out it acted like it did not want to go and then lurched into gear and jerked/jumped. Then, it did it once the next day. Now it is doing it everytime I pull out. I am having the Ford lot that I bought it from check it this Tue.

I brought my SUV to the dealer to get a regular service done. First they lost my keys, I go back the next day they still didn't find the keys and to fix this they reprogrammed new ones. Ever since my Escape has been doing this thing only in the AM where it Won't move when I step on the gas peddle, then it "lurches" forward. I just found a similar problem on here by another Escape owner. They probablly screwed up something when they had to reprogram the replacement keys! I'll call the dealership in the am to set up a time for them to fix it, I hope!

Escape YES 4 cyl
- Automatic transmission
- 180 miles
The car fails to move in drive or reverse, then lurches forward. It was bought off the lot on Labor Day Weekend with 88 miles on it, and sporadically noticed the transmission problem in the following weeks. Brought it to the dealer on 30 Sept and the problem did not appear, nor were there any computer codes, so they kept it overnight. It acted up the next AM when they tested it. Still no computer codes. The dealer called Father Ford and they said the computer controls the hydraulics in the transmission and it needs to be reprogrammed. (MSVista?r) It was reprogrammed, road tested so the computer could "relearn" its routine, and was pronounced repaired, no charge to me, almost $300.00 to Father Ford. It was discharged on 22 Sept 08.

The gears were lurching like other complaints. I noticed that something was leaking on the front passenger side. I took it in and was a problem with the condenser so they replaced the whole system- it's been fine ever since and was thankfully covered under warranty.
