Tires needed to be replaced even though plenty tread was left on tires. No longer possesed the tires. Firestone, wilderness, P255/70R16 with 42,000 miles. Complete tread separation occurred on this tire on the morning of 10/31/00 at 5:30am while I was on my way to work. I was driving on the sw fwy in houston. The road way is very smooth and level. It was dry and traffic was light. The tire did not sound like a typical blowout. I felt it rather than heard it but the control of the vehicle was immediately compromised. The vehicle swerved but I regained control, slowed as quiclky as possible and pulled over. The tread is in one separate piece and the carcas is torn, frayed, etc. (dot number: 02-6555 tiresize: P255/70R16)

On a 1999 Ford Expedition are Firestone, Wilderness AT tires. Vehicle was parked when people indicated that left rear tire was splitting on the sidewall where tread met the casing. Took to Firestone retailer & mechanic refused to replace the tire due to not being on recall. Have not exchange the tire. Tire size is #16

Tread separation with 4-5 inch break and complete collapse of tire. This complete tire falilure could easily have caused a major accident as I had been driving 70 mph. The tread separated in the middle of the tire and tore through to the inside with the 4-5 inch slit completely through. I am fortunate that it did not blow out at the high speed driving. When I saw how the tire failed, I asked Firestone to replace them but they refused and said that only 15 inch tires were being replaced. Well, this tire had the same type of failure. I became so concerned for my life and my family that I have now replaced them with Michelin tires myself and have the Firestone tires in my garage waiting on the NHTSA to force Firestone to take responsible action to reimburse me for replacing these dangerous tires. It is now not only the 15 inch, but also the 16 Firestone Wilderness AT tires that are failing. Help us the innocent public. (dot number: W2cu tiresize: P255/70R16)

All four tires are dry rotting on the tread and Ford and general will not replace the tires at there cost. Since all four tires have the same issue, this appears to be a defect in the tire. Attached is an email I sent to general tire and Ford, neither of which offered any assistance other than point the finger at each other. Email: I own a 1999 Ford Expedition with grabber aw 255-R70-16 tires. In January my wife brought in the car to Ford for routine maintenance and pointed out unusual ware on the tires. Ford said it was nothing to worry about. I let it go. Because of all the Firestone issues I decided to inspect my tires in August, and discovered that they appear to be dry rotting on the outer treads on all four tires. I called your customer service number and was told to go to sears and have them inspect my tires. I did this and the young man who handles the register made a two minute inspection of my tires and said the dry rotting was not severe and not effecting the tire.( dot number: Tire size: 255-R70-16 )

While a 1999 Ford, Expedition, original equipment, tire side P255/70R16 and dot# unavailable was being serviced was informed of cracks around the sidewall where the tread meets on all four tires. Firestone notified, and will not replace because tires were not covered under recall. All four tires have shown sign of cracking along the tread. Firestone dealer would not replace the tires because these are not part of the recall.

I own a set of Firestone Wilderness AT tires; size 255/70R/16 109S M/S. I know that these tires are not covered under the latest recall, but they appear to be doing the same as the 15" tires. I had them inspected at Firestone and they observed the same thing. They, Firestone distributor, suggested that I replace them immediately, but I do not want to pay for the same tire which will bring the same result. I have since purchased a set of Michelin ltx M&S's. my tires are alot worse than I expected after having them removed and being able to see them on both sides. I always keep all of my vehicles in excellent condition, including the proper tire inflation.( dot number: Vclu tire size: 255/70R/16 )

Tires show cracks along the tread, just as the recalled tires for Firestone did before they blew out, or had tread failure. My tires are not in the warning, or recall, so Firestone won't replace them. Since this is my only transportation to/from work, and I travel the freeway 70 miles per day, tread failure will happen soon if not replaced.( dot number: Tire size: 235/70 R17 )
