There was a subtle ticking sound coming from the engine that become more and more pronounced over the course of a few days. One day, while diagnosing the issue, I had the engine idling while listening to various parts of the engine... While idling, there was a sudden catastrophic engine failure; the sound of metal parts hitting/grinding and the engine turned off. I knew that it was bad and did not bother trying to restart the engine. I had the Expedition towed to local mechanic nearby and after a few days they discovered that a roller follower (rocker roller) on cylinder two had failed and broke into the engine. This resulted in needing a new engine.
This is a common failure; most common on cylinder two.
