The odometer wouldn't light up. It could not be read, and therefore the car failed it's safety inspection. The shop originally said it needed a light bulb replacement. It wasn't the bulb. I had to remove the instrument cluster to send it out to another shop to have resistors soldered. Thank you YouTube video for troubleshooting this problem.

the backlighting on the radio and odometer cluster would randomly shut off during night driving, but would randomly decide to work again as well.
