The contact owns a 2000 Buick Lesabre. The contact turned the engine off and smelled a strong odor of fuel; however, there was no fuel leaking from the vehicle. The "check engine" and "exhaust emission" warning light indicators illuminated on the instrument panel, and would remain illuminated until the engine was turned off. The emission technician was able to repair the exhaust emission indicator. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the catalytic converter was replaced. The failure recurred. The dealer stated that NHTSA recall campaign id 04V090000 (fuel system, gasoline: Delivery); however, the VIN was excluded from the recall. The contact was in the process of replacing the catalytic converter for the second time by an authorized dealer. The failure mileage was less than 10,000.
