CarComplaints.com Notes: Widespread instrument panel failure is a common and frustrating reality for many 2004-2005 Chevy Cavalier owners. They're often left in the dark when it comes to knowing how fast they're going, what their engine temperature is, or even how much fuel they have left in the tank.

The likely culprit is a series of bad "stepper motors" which control the gauges and are no longer covered under warranty. Think not being able to see your speed is a safety issue and should be recalled for all owners? We'd agree. Trouble is, apparently the NHTSA does not.

Cavalier LS 2.2L

It may seem like bumps are causing the dome light to come on, but at least in my case, it's from my knee bumping my dangling keys while going over said bumps. Easy way to test, just sit idle and start tapping the end of your key with it in the ignition. I can make mine come on at will doing that. It seems waaaaaay too sensitive

Another problem with the Cavalier is the dome light on the inside of the vehicle. For unknown reasons everytime I hit a bump in the road or go over a speed bump or just whenever the road is rough the dome light turns on and off constantly. Whenever I hit a bump the light turns on then turns off. Not sure what is wrong here as always. This car has so many interior electrical problems. No love for me tonight.

Cavalier LS 2.2L I4

When the road gets rough or if I pass over a bump or uneven pavement the dome light turns on and fades out. It is so annoying. It reminds me of a CD without skip protection. It is draining my battery and my mind.
