I bought this 2005 brand new in 2005. I have had nothing but problems with it. When the speedometer stopped working, then started to work again, and now doesn't work. Sometimes the gas gauge will go haywire. The paint on the trunk lid is coming off, the stripes are coming off, and now the sunroof will not close and it is getting wet between the closure and roof. It is rusting inside where the seats are attached to the floor and also outside of the car. Every three yrs. I have to replace the brake pads. Never received a notice on recall on steering in 2008.

Cavalier

  • Automatic transmission
  • 60,500 miles

I recently purchased my 2005 chevy cavalier from an older couple, who bought it new in 2004. The car is immaculate, has never missed an oil change (they gave me all their paperwork from maintenance and repairs) and has only 60,500 miles on it! A week after I got the car, I noticed that the speedometer stuck at 18mph, then dropped to 0 when I parked it in the driveway. Since then it hasn't moved an inch. Odometer and temperature and fuel gauges work fine, but speedometer and RPM gauge are stuck at 0.

I just bought the car and don't have the money to put into it right now. I'm afraid of what it's going to cost, but I am more afraid of what it will cost if I don't get it fixed. I'm sure it is gonna be easy to get a speeding ticket when I don't know how fast I'm going. I came online to try to look up what may be wrong with it, and instead found several blogs with 100s of complaints all of which complain of the same issue, and, most of them report low mileage.

THIS DEFINITELY SOUNDS LIKE A RECALL!!!!

Well I have a 2005 cavalier also around the same mileage and my speedometer needle doesn't work and the gas gauge doesn't work and neither does the rpm gauge and that's bullshit that GM won't recall these problems........ so why in the hell don't they recall this bullshit!!!!!!!

It may cost upto $550 to repair and I am not sure how much it is going to cost to replace it. It seems that it is a fairly common problem with this model. The GM should issue a recall for this defect. This is not normal wear and tear, this is a design or a mufacturing defect as a result it becomes a safety issue. Other brand and model vehicles with lot more years and lot more miles have their speedometer/ cluster panel still working efficiently. I hope the goverment takes notice of it and ask GM to fix the problem.

Just wanted to add that it is very interesting that Chevy has this issue and wants the consumer to fix it themselves. Especially with the different vehicles that people to choose from later after this experience.

I am in the process of buying a 2005 Chevy Cavalier. I loved everything about the car. New breaks, new wiper blades, new wheels, blah blah blah. It's in great condition and its inexpensive for me to buy. But I was out test driving it and the speedometer was stuck on 85 mph. I asked them if it could be fixed and since it's certified, they fixed it the next day. But now that I've seen all these complaints, I'm wondering if it will happen again? Once it's fixed does the problem reoccur?? Help!

Cavalier 2.2L

  • Manual transmission

After 45 minutes driving my speedometer stops working. This is really bad because I'm driving at 4:00 AM and driving through a military base. I have no clue had to fix this because it will work again after a hour or 2. This is a big issue and GM needs to fix this.
