While turning a corner at a normal rate of speed, active handling turned on and tried to straighten out the vehicle, putting me on a collision course with the car in the opposite lane. It would have forced crossing over the lane had I not reacted quickly. Repair shop diagnosed as failed steering wheel position sensor; a part GM chose to discontinue years ago even though it is one of the most critical safety components of the vehicle.

Service active handling message on dic. It comes and gos. It usually shuts off after turning ignition off and restarting. I don't know if it is working or not. This safety concern. GM should have service parts for electronic components or have some other company have the rights to make them. What are owners supposed to do? we need a law for this. This is not a throw a way car. This car has only 24000 miles.

After having the harmonic balancer replaced. After leaving baierl automotive service (wexford, pa) and 1/8 mile drive, the following warning messages appeared with alarm on my D.I.C. active handling warming up' then "service vehicle soon " they have know they broke it when they dropped the steering but can't get the part to fix it. I found the parts, (used) required and paid way to much money for labor to have them install them. After around 200 miles my D.I.C. now annunciate, active handling, service ABS, service traction control. Do I need to get a lawyer for help.

1997 thru 2000 Chevy Corvettes have had ABS / traction control problems since their original production. The problem is GM never fixed the problem until the 2001 model year and this part does not fit the 1997 - 2000 autos. They no longer make parts to fix the problem, and the ABS module can not be repaired by after market repair facilities. So now we have thousands of vehicles on the road with a problem that can not be repaired.their are many complaints about this problem on the GM forums sites.I feel a big problem with this is since this is a Corvette these cars are not going away and will be on the road for many decades to come as they are a collectible vehicle.I do believe GM has the responsibility to fix this problem or at least release info to aftermarket repair facilities so they can be repaired.or make a part so these cars can be repaired and be on our highways safe.in their own words in their owners manual they say if the ABS / traction / handling control light is on to see a dealer as soon as possible, that's great but they can not fix the problem as they have no parts to fix it. Thank you

Service engine soon light is also active traction control warning is on. Dealer says car needs "steering angle sensor" which GM does not make anymore it comes up as discontinued part. I think it is dangerous to drive this car without active traction handling and would like it fixed if we could get the part. Frustrated

When I make a slow turn left or right sometimes the front brake would grab my car as the service active handling would show on my dash. The dealer classic Chevrolet had my car for 2 weeks as they said it was the steering wheel position sensor (but GM has discontinued new parts for 1999 & 2000 models only). The dealer couldn't repair the problem even when I provided a used part as they say used sensors don't work. There are over 6,000 1999 & 2000 vettes that were sold so what are we supposed to do trash our $20,000 cars to the dumpster? GM needs to take accountability and at least start offering this part for manufacturing. The reason GM quit make this part was due to a dispute between them & 2 manufacturers who claimed they would be able to manufacture this product for these year models. This GM dropped it but they still make it for other older & newer models.

My warning lights came on indicating check anti-lock brakes and traction control. After a visit to a Chevy dealer, I was told that the sensor controlling these items was bad and GM no longer produced the part. After searching the internet without success for the part, I was told by one part supplier that he had 15 people on a waiting list for the part and no idea when he would have one. In the meantime, I am driving a vehicle without anti-locks and without traction control, safety options I paid for that are now inoperable. Should an accident occur as a result of these failings, would GM accept responsibility??
